SS Malachi Butler will be just 17 for the Draft, but he plays like a player well-beyond that. A 6-3, 190lb polished hitter and distinguised glove, he checks the boxes. But it wasn't too long ago he could hardly run down the line. It hurt to do anything.

It turns out whiff rate, outside of elite outliers, doesn't move the needle in the Draft. Average EV however, is a significant determining factor of draft position. 2018-2026 first round picks: 19.1% Whiff 92.9 Avg. EV 2018-2026 4th-6th round picks: 20.5% Whiff 89.4 Avg. EV

Interesting observation: While Max EV of drafted top-150 pick college bats continues to trend upward, so too does chase rate. Teams seem to be more and more willing to sacrifice swing decisions for raw power potential. That said, 2026 was the biggest YoY chase% drop since 2022.

Amateur scouting is evolving. Ways to evaluate players are expanding. For some organizations, complex athletic testing often outweighs the baseball card. Force plates, dynamometers, kinematic sequencing tools and sprint gates are bringing big signing bonuses.
