From the first draft of OSaSF: #WritingCommunity #WIPSnips #WriteSky
Varin paled.
	‘Go, Ros,’ his mother breathed.
Roseus tightened his grip on Varin, the bones of the healer's wrist digging into his palm. They were thin, feather-light. He could snap them without thought, indeed it was an effort not to.
‘I won’t leave you for him,’ he growled.
‘If I am not alive when he arrives, he will kill Varin.’ Each word was slow, her breathing scant and shallow.
‘You will give him your last breath?’
‘I have given everything else,’ she whispered.

Searched my in progress draft for 'call' and didn't even look at any other options when this one came up. From OSaSF: #WritingCommunity #WIPSnips #WriteSky
Death gripped the edge of his cloak and whipped it across his chest. He melted into the waves as he took on the form of a black eel. He slithered through the gaps in the branches of the trees until he found himself at the edge of the Starlit Palace. Thick wooden boards lay overhead, creating land for the humans who dwelt there. Death slipped through a gap, grew into a man, and entered through a servant’s door. He expected the voice to call him up into the palace above. But, when it came again, no more than a whimper, it was from below.

The MMC and his LI in this first draft keep running head first into impossible situations that I have no idea how to get them out of and I'm starting to think that no one in this story is looking where they are going. #WritingCommunity #pantser #pantsing #WriteSky

From the first draft of OSaSF: #WritingCommunity #WIPSnips
The sight of the sea stole his breath. It reflected the sky, pale pink, waves tipped gold. The horizon was edged with deep orange light and a single star glimmered above it. The Dawn Star. It had been ten years since he’d last seen it, and something settled in his chest. A piece sliding into place. He wasn’t in the dank lower rooms of the palace; he was outside, breathing the brine-thick air. A whisper caught at the edges of his mind, but it was overtaken by the chaos surrounding him.

From the first draft of OSaSF, which is about a slave boy who has to work with the God of Death to find and free a goddess: #WritingCommunity #WriteSky #WIPSnips
‘Beautiful,’ he said.
Something rumbled. It took Roseus a beat to realise it was Harber. ‘Kneel,’ he bit out. ‘Eyes down.’
Roseus dropped to his knees. Heat flushed his skin, limbs shaking. His head was light, a strange fog tinging his thoughts. It was from the eyes on him, the way the man had appraised him, the simple note in his voice when he’d said that word. Beautiful.
The man chuckled as he retook his seat. ‘Yeah, I was possessive with this one the first few months. It fades.’ He paused. ‘Though, with one that looks like that…’
‘I’m glad you understand,’ Harber said, and the conversation moved on to other things.

Not sure if I mentioned but OSaSF is an MM romance in which a slave (who was once a prince) must work with the God of Death (who is a merman) to free a goddess and save his people. ANYWAY, here are some 'teeth' ... #WritingCommunity
Roseus tried to dig his elbows into the sand, but Death laid his hand against his collarbone and pinned him. Pale fire burned in Death’s eyes, his lips pulled back over needle-sharp teeth.
‘You tricked me, Little Fish,’ he said, voice half a growl.

Yup we went with 'rigging'. From the first draft of OSaSF: #WritingCommunity #WIPSnips
As Gorling shrank from view, Harber turned away. Something caught in Roseus’s chest, a snag, a longing. He wanted to stay on the deck, but his feet turned, his body following where his mind wanted to cling to the open sea air. Harber ducked through a low doorway and down a set of steps. The walls were tight, the anemone lights too small to properly light the hall. Gentle chatter threaded through the waves and creak of rigging, preceded by the scent of something baking. They were heading to the mess, and Roseus tried not to think of the last time he was in one.

From the first draft of 'Of Starlight and Sea Foam' #WritingCommunity #WIPSnips
‘Go to sleep, Roseus,’ Death sighed, so quiet it could have been mistaken for a breath.
The tension bled from Roseus’s body. It should have scared him, how diligently it responded, but all he felt was relief as he finally succumbed to sleep.

From the first draft of 'Of Starlight and Sea Foam' #WritingCommunity #WIPSnips
A thunk sounded, Death’s body jerked as black blood sprayed from his shoulder. He loosed a snarl and twisted towards the threat, one clawed hand still on Roseus. Another thunk, a bolt struck his chest. He grasped for it as the glow drained from his skin. His tail thrashed through the surf, once, twice. He collapsed.

It's funny starting this first drafting thing all over again, there are so many parts of it I'd forgotten. Like, how when the plot wont plot sometimes it needs breathing space even when that's the last thing I want to give it. What is your least favourite part of first drafs? #WritingCommunity

From the first chapter of the first draft of Mermaid WIP - a mother tells her son about her nightmare: #WIPSnips #WritingCommunity
‘You dive before I can catch you, without replenishing your breath. My lungs are screaming, so I know you can't have much left. I'm forced to surface and tread water, too panicked to fill my lungs and follow you. From there, the dream strays. Every time I dip beneath the waves the darkness in the trench grows, until a hand grasps my ankle and drags me down too.’

What if I touched it?
Elin froze. The wine settled. The flame stopped dancing, but the light continued to pulse. She edged her toes above the waterline.
What if I touched it?
The thought came again. Her voice in her head, blended with another. She moved her toes closer, her heel resting on the bath, her toes warmed by the flame.

From the first chapter of the second draft of Witchy WIP #WritingCommunity #WIPSnips
The cemetery widened, sprawling to their left with the cliff on their right. Headstones jutted from the well-kept grass, marked with the names and the spells required to keep the bones quiet. Mourners paused to pay their respects and add ingredients to the spell baskets to help stabilise the magick. Lettie looked out across the headstones, her mother was there somewhere, though her father had never brought her to the cemetery to visit, and Lettie had never dared request it.

It's humid in the opening paragraph of my short story about intrusive thoughts #WIPSnips #WritingCommunity
The satin train of Elin’s wedding dress streamed in her wake as her bare feet slapped against the concrete. The midday heat clung to her skin, clogged her throat, or perhaps that was from the tears coating her cheeks. She stumbled to a stop. A glance back the way she’d come showed no pursuit, and she filled her lungs with the acrid London air. She gripped the side of the blue and white balustrade and leaned out. Grey water languished far below, lapping at the base of Tower Bridge.

Going with 'pieces' as my synonym. This is from my short story that combines magic with intrusive thoughts, neither of witch appear in this snip. #WritingCommunity #WIPSnips
Elin finished watering her plants and stowed the watering can beneath the sink. She pulled some leeks out of the fridge and chopped them on the counter that separated her from Billie.
‘Are you going out tonight?’ Elin asked.
Billie nodded, her gaze fixed on her game of solitaire and her silence clear. Elin wasn’t invited.
She swept the leeks into a frying pan, dropped in some butter, and sliced the mushrooms. She tapped the knife against the board to dislodge the pieces stuck to the blade.

Just a hint at the strange goings on in a short story I've been working on #WIPSnips #WritingCommunity
Billie lit a cigarette. ‘Not the first time, or the second. But she told me about it. Then, last week we were having dinner, and out of nowhere she stabs a knife through her hand. Her whole body went loose like she’d had the best orgasm of her life. Then that dust was everywhere, and she was gone.’ She blew smoke into the night. ‘It only takes one time. You give in once, and you’re gone.’

From draft one of Witchy WIP. I cut this scene when working on draft two. #WritingCommunity #WIPSnips
She climbed the stairs to Mariner’s study, paused at the door, and listened. Nothing, no footsteps chasing after her, no glimpse of red eyes. It should’ve been a relief as she didn’t have the strength to refuse him again, but her gut sank when she closed the door behind her. She knocked her head back against the solid wood.

I love when I can post a snip from the short story I've been working on 🖤 #WritingCommunity #WIPSnips
Three days after Elin broke her phone, her mother, Mauve, arrived at her studio flat with a replacement. She walked inside, wearing her grey Burberry coat and a scowl. The icy wind clung to her like perfume, chilling each of Elin’s cheeks when she swept in for a kiss. As she perused the space, she unwound her scarf and flicked open the buttons of her coat. Her lips were painted the same colour as her name.

Substituted tournament for 'games.' Bit of a longer one but I had to include the last line! Tea is a very important drink in the world of Witchy WIP and in this scene, Lettie considers it her best form of defense. #WritingCommunity #WIPSnips
‘I’m not here to play games,’ he said.
‘Just to waste time, it seems.’
Walters stepped closer so only the width of the desk separated them. She arched her neck to maintain eye contact and allowed the slightest of smiles to tug at the corner of her mouth. His gaze dropped to her lips. It was only for a moment, less than a second, but that was all it took. He was attracted to her. The thought fluttered at her rib cage, but she didn’t allow it to settle.
‘You were almost kidnapped,’ he said, his gaze back on hers. ‘Because Miss Darling allowed a man to stay in post for her own selfish needs.’
‘I’m aware,’ Lettie said. ‘And I am dealing with it.’
‘Miss Morrose, if you’re in danger—’
‘It’s because you haven’t found whatever killed Mariner.’
His expression narrowed, the glare made harsher by the sharp lines of his scars. ‘Fine,’ he bit out. ‘Shall we start with your interview, considering you are clearly well enough?’
‘Gladly,’ Lettie said. ‘But I refuse to engage with you further without something boiling to douse you with.’

From the first chapter of WItchy WIP #WritingCommunity #WIPSnips
The train pulled into Olynn Station. Boots clomped as the soldiers returning from the border disembarked. Voices carried from the platform, joyous shouts, running footsteps, thick, tear-stained laughter. But, Lettie’s window looked out at the other side of the tracks. There the soldiers waited for the southbound train. A man clutched the hands of a woman in uniform, his eyes watery, his head tipped towards her as she spoke with a strained smile. Beside them, another couple comforted crying children. The soldiers without families chatted in groups, smiles strained.

‘Do you still love Jules?’ Billie asked.
She was sat on a stool by the counter with her knees drawn up. She wore a black thong and a loose shirt. There was a towel wrapped around her head and a cigarette clamped in the corner of her mouth.
‘It’s been two months,’ Elin said, as she picked a dead leaf from one of her plants. The windows were open and warm air drifted through the flat. For early spring, the weather was unseasonable.
‘I still love Alice,’ Billie said. ‘If she chose to go, does that mean she can choose to come back?’

Crypts, pyramids, same thing. This is from the first chapter of Witchy WIP. Whilst walking through the cemetery, our FMC, Lettie, wants to know more about the detective assigned to investigate her ex-lovers muder. #WIPSnips #WritingCommunity
Ava shook her head. ‘Focus on the sending.’
‘I have been, now I require a distraction.’
Crypts joined the spread of headstones. Their heavy doors were barred with metal slabs. Candles burned on the steps with fresh laid bowls of smoking herbs. Guards lingered amongst them. Dressed in grey and black, they were as silent as the graves they watched over.
‘He’s a soldier turned detective,’ Ava said. ‘He used to be stationed in The Wastes. As far as we can tell, he was no better than a bounty hunter.’
‘And? I read a rumour that he was involved in the late Lord Hest’s death.’
‘Well, he garners much suspicion and rightly so. He’s part nightmare.’
