What do a fire coral, blushing star coral, boulder star coral and upside-down jelly fish have in common?
Besides all being cnidarians, theses species now have their complete nuclear genome sequences fully available. As part of the Aquatic Symbiosis Genome (ASG) Project , this group of marine invertebrate genomes have been published. A massive collaborative effort via the ASG helped form a hub of diverse scientists interested in photosymbiosis, including colleagues from NSU (Abby Renegar), University of Puerto Rico (Nick Schizas), Florida International University (Anthony Bellantuono), UCLA (Monica Medina, Elizabeth Boville), and the sequencing team at Wellcome Sanger Institute among others.

One MS degree on octocoral gene expression and a doctoral project on Lake Okeechobee harmful algal blooms advance
We had two successful Master of Science defenses in the NSU Halmos College of Arts & Sciences Molecular Microbiology and Genomics (MMG) Lab this week. Congrats to Hailey Poignant for her masterful defense of her thesis entitled, "Assessing gene expression changes in the octocoral Briareum asbestinum due to Vibrio coralliilyticus exposure." This was very nice work that is part of a larger experiment, and where Hailey had to master multiple lab methods in a short amount oif time - RNA extractions and bioinformatics analyses.

This is an absolute disaster. If we don't stop this, they will turn NSF into a pawn of the Trump administration. There will be no research on climate, biodiversity, or anything that isn't eugenics or AI or how to more efficiently destroy the planet for profit. This cannot be allowed to happen.

Claims by the Trump administration that marine protected areas are a heavy-handed restriction on the U.S. fishing industry do not hold water. Science shows these refuges for sea life help local economies and allow fish populations to thrive By @whysharksmatter.bsky.social

Trump is stripping protections from marine protected areas – why that’s a problem for fishing’s future, and for whales, corals and other ocean life
America’s marine protected areas help fish populations thrive. Trump’s plan to open them to industrial fishing may ultimately harm the fishing industry itself.
