One of the strange and wonderful parts of publishing a game is seeing what happens after it leaves your hands. The folks at Streaming Rainbow have started a full campaign of Oceania 2084, and I've been having a wonderful time watching it.

Oceania 2084 is both a creative experiment and a political intervention, showing how TTRPGs can grapple with difficult social and human questions. Earlier academic work, including a master’s thesis, has examined how the game adapts Orwell’s 1984 into a playable and faithful role-playing experience.

This talk explores how Oceania 2084 uses its mechanics to define and challenge authoritarianism through procedural rhetoric. Released in late 2024 after six years of development, the game quickly won the Italian RPG Magnifico award and earned praise from reviewers for its bold approach.

I have had similar experiences back in the day when I was a noob in the discworld MUD and an experienced player gave me my first in game coat and set of stiletto knives. It really fel in the same way. Like being cared for by someone paying it forward. :)

Another person who really helped me out was Tim. When Oceania 2084 was a very rough draft I got to show him the design and hear his thoughts on it. And much later during the Kickstarter campaign he agreed to share the campaign through hos mailing list. Such an awesome person.

The campaign uses a shared-world, rotating-player structure, and the results have been excellent so far. I won't spoil any of the emerging stories, but there are already a few threads that have completely won me over.

The Resistance Players and Big Brother spend time showing how the game works in play, which makes the series a great resource for anyone who owns the game but hasn't had a chance to bring it to the table yet.

They've built a bleak, oppressive version of Oceania that feels very true to the inspirations behind the design, while still making it entirely their own. What I've especially appreciated is how approachable they've made the experience.
