What's most upsetting me as a journal editor is that many papers we receive where AI use is disclosed for editing and language refinement actually appear to have been ruined rather than improved by AI. We get what seem like promising underpinning studies, but totally obscured by over-complex text.

Some of it is the people who lack that ethical compass. Those that used to plagiarise, salami slice, p-hack, add their name to a student's or RA's work without contributing etc now use LLMs instead. We shouldn't pretend that there hasn't always been dodgy conduct.

It is AI. You start to see some patterns after a bit depending on the AI tool used, but it's hard to find the smoking gun sometimes. (Fed up journal editor who is trying not to send this stuff to reviewers, but in the deluge of AI generated submissions, we miss things).

The latter point is why it needs to be a question of institutional policing not just the responsibility of journal editors. There are universities hiring and promoting these people, that's why they are doing it. If you're not a journal editor I don't think people realise HOW bad it's got.
