What's most upsetting me as a journal editor is that many papers we receive where AI use is disclosed for editing and language refinement actually appear to have been ruined rather than improved by AI. We get what seem like promising underpinning studies, but totally obscured by over-complex text.

The latter point is why it needs to be a question of institutional policing not just the responsibility of journal editors. There are universities hiring and promoting these people, that's why they are doing it. If you're not a journal editor I don't think people realise HOW bad it's got.

Yesterday 142 academic staff at the University of Lincoln were put at risk of redundancy including the entire Politics and International Relations team. This follows cuts since 2024 which have already seen over 500 people leave the university. This is the 'University of No Regrets'.
