As if Roosevelt bought oil from Hitler and Tojo in 1940.

Of course, Trump’s been perfectly willing to reject white asylum seekers too, as long as they’re fleeing Russian prison. www.thebulwark.com/p/he-fled-a-...

Good thread, thank you. Getting back to democratic norms is going to be a long haul.

“We started to decline the moment we stopped hating, eradicating and expelling jews,” reads one message. “Exterminate the jewish state,” reads another. According to the FBI, this was posted by a professor at Haverford University, who stalked his Jewish colleague. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/07/u...

I don’t know, but how weird it would be if Dems win Tx and lose MI. Don’t think that’s probable, but not impossible either.

from what I can see, this kind of standard is reserved very selectively for one country and one people.

Agree. There are 364 days every year to criticize Israel and to discuss the rights of Palestinians - and I’d agree w much of that discussion. But on one day commemorating the most sadistic kind of pogrom targeting Jews, Mamdani spends 2/3 of his comment talking abt how Israel kinda deserved it. And…

And above all, claw back as much as possible of the corrupt $$$ his family has made. As long as they’ve got that money, they’ve got a lot of power.

Or, better yet, get universities to lower their costs so students don’t have to take out insane loans.

Gd chance extremists win in France too, and possibly rw in Spain. Japan also swung pretty hard right, partly in reaction to immigration issues, tho not to to an extremist extent. Modi still firmly entrenched, and Erdogan having some success w his brand of neo-Ottoman populism. Long way still to go.

completely to deal with the consequences of aging societies, and having too few young people to support their spending.

French govt spending is already 57% of GDP. Despite this, students are protesting underfunded schools with poor conditions. France is also in a huge debt crisis. Yet both Melenchon and Le Pen are campaigning on expensive new policies. Rich countries are failing…

As a Ukrainian, I don’t understand how anyone can call this war a “complicated conflict”

No, obvs not, which is partly why a lot of voters are turning against Trump. But this doesn’t undercut original point, which is that “we’re losing our superpower status,” while true, is not an argument that has much effect w Trump voters.

The phones don’t help, but extremist movements came along long before phones were invented. Also, some other factors are broadly common to all these countries - backlash against immigration & rapid social change, economic stagnation esp in more rural areas.

Not a weird decision, just a blatantly self-enriching and corrupt one.

There’s no perfect solution to this, some part of human nature likes authoritarianism (true on left too). But can mitigate to some degree w/ moderate policies on social issues, & offering genuinely good gov’t alternatives.

Yup, backlash to tentative increases in immigration brought in a right-wing gov’t in Japan too.

If Dems are smart and don’t swing far left. First party to recognize that most voters want a moderate, sane government that works to solve people’s problems can build a longterm winning coalition.

In the US at least, fertility rates are significantly higher among conservatives and the religious. I wonder if that will move our politics farther to the right over time. Well, the future belongs to the people who show up for it.
