I regularly see people wondering how it's possible that there are so many musicians and writers and film makers and artists from a tiny nation like Iceland. And the answer is really simple: State funding for art education and artists. I literally get a salary from the government to write books.

The logic of elementary school reading programs: book on the left has 30-40k words, large text and illustrations. Book on the right has 30-40k words and no illustrations. Book on the left is worth more points in the reading program because it’s physically bigger/thicker.

Two books, book on left is middle school disasters and about 1” thick, book on right is baby sisters club by Ann Martin and 1/2” thick.

My daughter got this answer marked wrong on a test and the correction/wrong answer combo makes my brain hurt.

Test with question asking why you knew a book was fantasy. Answer given: because birds can’t speak. Answer marked wrong with teacher correction : they can in fantasy texts.

My kid getting perfect academic achievements in all areas (one of two in her grade level) : gets a piece of paper with a gold foil star. Kid who got perfect attendance: gets a giant heavy medal and certificate. Good immune systems are worth more than anything else I guess?
