Had to cycle into town at commuting hour for the first time in a very long time. Soooooo many cyclists. Also, it is suddenly chilly.

I used to really enjoy doing Monday Evensong in the ChCh college choir, when the choristers had the night off. Afterwards we had sherry in the chaplaincy and then dinner together. It was all rather nice.

This should not be a controversial opinion to hold. It's very sad if we've got to the point where it is.

Or panniers - granted, I live alone, but I live at the top of a hill and I manage just fine with a shop every 5-7 days, my panniers and my touring bike.

I've been on Dell XPS for the last few laptops and I'm very happy with the current one (XPS 15, bought three years ago). Picked the first one I got specifically because I liked the keyboard, after visiting a Currys and going round bashing at as many keyboards as I could!

If REG remains in at the end of the round table I will be astonished.

I do feel Richard E. Grant is going to get himself voted off immediately. Or maybe it's a genius strategy. #CelebrityTraitors

Sorry! It was a good joke - but I am a rower, and we have complex relationships with world records (= world best times). I guarantee the river part of this will be more controversial in the rowing world than the crocs! (2028 world champs are in Sarasota, which has alligators).

Joanne Harris @joannerharris.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
More likely to be broken because it's a river, with flow, than because of the crocs! There's a reason rowing normally happens on lakes.

As a freelancer, I am often hired because I am efficient and fast and accurate. Which is fine if I'm being paid a project rate, but it really sucks when I'm on an hourly rate and do the job an hour quicker than colleagues.

Another vote for Diana Wynne Jones - maybe start with the Chrestomanci books? - and Susan Cooper's Dark is Rising Sequence. She's a good age for The Hobbit. Or Roald Dahl?

Much more connected to the real world than the films, especially because they were written in a time where the Cold War gave Fleming an easy villain grounded in reality.

I disagree - the books are far more serious than the films in many places. Bond has full-on depression in You Only Live Twice and going into the Man with the Golden Gun; Octopussy (despite the silly title) is also pretty sombre. There's plenty of other thoughtful plot points amid the spy shenanigans

What if one happens to like gherkins? (I am not going to feed your work into an AI detector, however - I have never opened an AI agent, the closest I get is Google search.)

Not sure we've ever been well-paid - I started in 2003 on a London salary of £18k (IIRC) and by the time I left FT employment in 2016 I was on £40kish as a news editor at a reputable trade mag. My freelance rates have barely changed in the last few years. But your friend also definitely has a point.

I would love it if they included capacity for complete, non-bagged bikes - I discounted trains as an option to go to Provence earlier this month because the number of changes and slow trains involved just made it impracticable and more expensive than flying. Instead I flew with a box.

I've spent a lot of time watching broadcast commentators prep to call a competition in many sports. The BBC gymnastics team seem to be unable to navigate the live results website to a) find a startlist and b) find results. Have they done any prep?

I caught a connection in Cologne on Monday by 30 seconds - the connecting train was on the opposite platform & I think was held for us. But track works on the following line meant I missed my Eurostar, not helped by them kicking us off a station early in Brussels. Eurostar put me on the next train.

Saw the Odyssey. Haven't been to the cinema for AGES. Enjoyed it. Was also relieved that my bike was still locked to the bike stand outside three hours later.

I watched a really good sports match that went to overtime earlier on. It was the men's under-20 European handball championships final and it was excellent, Hungary winning by two in the second overtime period against the favourites Sweden. Have not bothered with the bloody football today!

Football: just stop the clock when play stops and then we know how long there is left. Then when the commentators say there's 10 minutes to go there's actually 10 minutes and not six-bloody-teen.

Citymapper allows mixed mode - eg if I search from my house to a London station, I can see options for my bike and tubes, or bike hire and public transport. However I suspect it's confined to the city you've selected.

Council had claimed the contractors couldn't get access, tenant was being uncooperative, etc. Today's patrol officer got access, identified the issue, appears to have fixed it as the drips have finally slowed, all in a short time. I am baffled as to how nobody managed to do this sooner.

For the last TEN DAYS I've been suffering from a leak coming from the flat TWO FLOORS above mine. My upstairs neighbour's ceiling is disintegrating. Have called council (building freeholder) many times. Today called the emergency line. Patrol officer rocks up an hour later: "I've fixed the leak".

I am working at the rowing club today and just popped down to the café to buy a coffee. Mistimed and ended up with hail in my coffee in a 30-second run up the stairs back to my desk. WTF, it's May!

Isabella Plantation in Richmond Park on a sunny Saturday evening was maybe a bad idea just because of the sheer number of people doing selfies. But the light was good and the flowers pretty, so ...
A bright pink azalea is shown in a close-upAzaleas in pink and red border a still pond, and are reflected in its green waters. There are tall trees on the bank too.A white azalea is shown in close-up; it has orange highlights on its petals.A Mandarin duck turns its head coquettishly to the camera. It is reflected in the still pond waters against the reflection of purple azaleas.

I had a bee that was buzzing around my windows and kept flying into them rather than flying out of the open bit of the window. It was very noisy and annoying. Weirdly this happened several times in a row despite closing the window in between, I started wondering if I'd had several come in at once!

Why do insects manage to fly into a room through open windows and then invariably fail to find their route out again?
