Is it more fun here? I talk and write about film, TV and other cultural (hopefully) good stuff. And I can’t stop watching the news. Come say hi.

In all my years of press screenings at NYFF, only twice has the audience burst into applause mid-movie. Once was Hit Man, today’s was for Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti in Jesse Eisenberg’s lovingly comic salute to community theater, The Debut.

So enjoyed Michael Douglas on Smartless. Great talk on a fantastic career; a special treat for me? He talked about his days at the Eugene O’Neill National Playwright’s Conference. He and Danny DeVito literally built the stage there, where I did community theater as a teen!

Digger is furious comedy, Dr. Strangelove-like, but with a twist that makes it both more palatable and confusing. Riz Ahmed is dandy, but you can’t take your eyes off Cruise, ferociously committed to this ambitious but uneven satire.

Peter Max signed and sent this to me after we celebrated his new, naturalized citizenship on the air. An accomplished pop artist who loved New York and the country he proudly chose to call home. A remarkable life.

The new to theaters, Andrew Garfield/Paul Greengrass historical drama, The Uprising, insists history does repeat itself. But the film, determinedly comparing the English peasant revolt of the 1300s to today, left me with questions. And, even worse, uninspired.

Her impact on the world is legendary, but I will never forget that, when Gloria Steinem entered a room, she did not expect the fanfare so many others demand. What Steinem wanted was decency, honesty, kindness and equality. Thank you, Gloria.

And now Tim Curry. One of my happiest interviews was with him, after I told him, as a kid, I saw Rocky Horror in a teeny theater, upstairs, in London. He told me lots of rollicking stories and didn’t hold back about a few co-stars. What a treat he was. RIP and thanks.

The saddest news. Rest in Peace, Dolly Parton, who brought pure joy to the world. We had a wonderful talk a few years ago; she talked seriously about her responsibilities to the many who depended on her. A great, generous businessperson and world class talent.

This last season of The Bear (drops today, FX and Hulu) leans into the comic side many of us didn’t fully believed existed. Slapstick, sentimental and water logged (you’ll see), the episodes sent to critics deliver a wacky, bittersweet wrap. Nicely done.

Elizabeth Strout’s deceptively quiet “The Things We Never Say” winds up hitting like a thunderbolt. The story of a popular high school teacher feels light, but its impact, timely and profound. If you, like me, look to art for understanding, this is a novel you shouldn’t miss.
