Joan Liu @joanliu.bsky.social · 17hMy dad got pretty into Chinese traditions and "proper" (Beijing) pronunciations and now my Chinese is a weird mix of growing up hearing the Taiwan-based Mandarin accents with 70s-80s vocabulary, the ingrained corrections for Beijing pronunciation, and general rustiness. 🤪 120
Joan Liu @joanliu.bsky.social · 15/10/2026didn't realize it at the time, but having the hourly public bus show up 5 minutes before final bell was mine. I even went to a public meeting to plead for them to adjust the schedule! 030
Joan Liu @joanliu.bsky.social · 15/10/2026yes, to middle school and kindergarten (I was a shy kid, and so school folks assumed I didn't understand English and put me at a non-neighborhood school that had ESL). Biked otherwise in elementary school, and walked or public bus for high school (just under 2 miles meant no school bus). 010

Joan Liu @joanliu.bsky.social · 10/10/2026From my perspective, I've just been answering their questions. I literally don't know what I'm saying wrong, and they never offer any examples. 110
Joan Liu @joanliu.bsky.social · 10/10/2026I told someone I always approach my interactions with them assuming good intentions but know I don't get the same in return so I'm purposely limiting my interactions. They said they disagree and there are many times when I've said something to them that implies [negative view of them]. 🤦♀️ Like I said 230

Joan Liu @joanliu.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I was curious about what the event registration said, and it definitely painted a picture that the cats would mostly be indoors at windows and participants were supposed to make sure their cats felt comfortable and safe. ☹️ 011
Joan Liu @joanliu.bsky.social · 03/10/2026My parents went all in on the standalone GPS, and got three different models, to check each other. Dad reasoned that two/three would probably be the correct direction. Though one time I got to an intersection and one said one direction, 2 said the other direction, and my mom said to take the 3rd. 🤪 130
Joan Liu @joanliu.bsky.social · 03/10/2026My first car (higher trim, but certified used) had a built in gps, which required loading a cd into the trunk and needed a new cd every year. New roads confused it. 130

Joan Liu @joanliu.bsky.social · 01/10/2026The non-pedestrians tended to involve Kensington. There was a conference of some sort in Assembly last year. To/from Kensington is better described as coming to/from Kensington or Mama Ana's. Here are the actual sight lines. Movement along Middlesex generally doesn't include Kensington, except bikes 020
Joan Liu @joanliu.bsky.social · 01/10/2026The count doesn't really directly count Kensington traffic, but there's not much else other than Mama Ana's (and now Dunkin), which are responsible for a portion of the count. I'd say Kensington traffic is at least 1 person per light cycle at Middlesex 7:30-7:45 am 120
Joan Liu @joanliu.bsky.social · 01/10/2026More than one would expect, and the office workers tend to show up just at the end/after of the AM count window. 5 in the time it took me to unlock my bike after the count, for example.
