We are searching for a PhD student! Are you curious and excited to unravel how #root #exudation varies between species, how this relates to the root economics space and if and how it explains ecosystem functioning and species distribution in #grasslands?

Conceptual graphic of the project aims. Depicted is a schematic of the root economics space (RES) with added exudation traits (Work Package 1: integrating exudates into the root economics space). The lower, brown-colored half of the background shows labels such as soil nutrients, soil pH, and soil moisture, with arrows (effects) pointing toward the RES (Work Package 2: environmental filtering of exudation strategies). The upper, green-colored half shows labels such as productivity, carbon cycling, greenhouse gas, and nutrient cycling, with arrows (effects) pointing from the RES toward this area (Work Package 3: effects of exudation strategies on ecosystem functions). Pictograms of a cow, a tractor, and a fertilizer bag signify land-use effects that mediate these interactions.

I had an amazing time at the University of Wyoming visiting Daniel Laughlin and his lab, discussing exciting new research ideas and enjoying the stunning prairie and the snowy mountains together with @karlandraczek.bsky.social!

Experimental setup: done! Fingers crossed now for all the little seedling friends to grow strong. First PhD experiment of @azmisheriff.bsky.social @zalf.bsky.social very well started! Thanks @elsaelsam.bsky.social, @karlabarfuss.bsky.social, Grit and Tilo for support!

Three scientists enjoy transplanting plant seedlings into planting cones.

Lots of planting cones filled with sand soil and freshly transplanted seedlings have been placed in a greenhouse.

It was an absolute pleasure to be part of the thematic session at #BES2024 lead by @moniqueweemstra.bsky.social and @kaaze7.bsky.social. I presented work on holistic belowground functioning by the #sUnderfoot group including results from @josephtumber.bsky.social and @jitkaklimesova.bsky.social

It's this time of the year again... 🎄 what a pleasure to party, play and glitter with my wonderful colleagues from #SustainableGrasslandSystems group @zalf.bsky.social in the cozy new lab in #Paulinenaue. And look at this belowground Christmas tree! @elsaelsam.bsky.social @milosbielcik.bsky.social

Celebrating with Christmas decoration and happy people
