I've been gathering my thoughts on the use of LLMs for writing (prose). My conclusion is that despite all the amazing things they *can* do, writing is not one of them. jnsgr.uk/2026/10/write-it-yourself

Ubuntu 26.10 Stonking Stingray Beta will be delayed
Due to unforeseen infrastructure issues, Ubuntu 26.10 Stonking Stingray Beta will be delayed by a week and is now expected on October 1st. We expect to resolve the blocking issue shortly and apologize for the delay. We do not foresee an impact on the release date for Ubuntu 26.10, which is still October 15th.

Improving Ubuntu Desktop stability under memory pressure
As part of Ubuntu 26.10, we are changing a long standing default that defines how the desktop behaves when the system runs very low on memory. The issue When the system runs out of memory, it has to choose processes to terminate. It led to issues such as Bug 2089800 - Ubuntu desktop is unstable under memory pressure due to undesireable OOMScoreAdjust values. In some cases, critical parts of the desktop session, like GNOME Shell or D-Bus, could be selected before the application that actually c...

Making local LLM behaviour visible with OpenTelemetry and COS Lite
Making local LLM behaviour visible with OpenTelemetry and COS Lite A local large language model (LLM) does not need to crash to provide a poor experience. It can take too long to begin, pause between output chunks, or consume more memory and tokens than expected. Observability can make this behaviour visible. An instrumented model path can show how long a response takes, when its first output appears, how many tokens it consumes, and whether it completes successfully. This article explores...

Investing in automated C to Rust translation
I have written before about the role that Rust will play in Ubuntu’s future. The case for Rust in 2026 is clear: it gives systems programmers more ergonomic control over performance and resource use while eliminating many classes of memory-safety defects, making it especially useful for software operating at important security boundaries. The harder question is what to do about the enormous amount of mature C code that already exists? Rewrites have long been expensive and risky, and do not o...

Introducing Frontdesk, a first-pass triage bot for sponsoring requests
Introducing Frontdesk: earlier feedback on sponsoring requests At Debcrafters we’re always looking for ways to make Ubuntu’s contribution processes smoother and give people a better experience when they show up with a patch, a merge, or an SRU. One recurring pain point is sponsoring. Contributors without upload rights depend on a relatively small group of sponsors and reviewers to look at their merge proposals and bugs, and that group is busy — juggling their own work, other reviews, and e...
