Physics Nobel Prize this week... the Quark Gluon Plasma/nearly perfect fluid is LONG overdue for one, but my bet is on condensed matter/materials due to standing biased :/

Ten years of access to scientists: Astronomy on Tap returns to PYGMALION - Culture
When I think about space, the universe, and its vastness, I feel deep existential dread. We are but tiny blips. I have a lot of questions, and there isn’t an ask-an-astronomer hotline I can call, ...

If I understand this, two mathematicians (one at Anthropic) combined a great deal of human effort with LLM input to come close to a famous problem, showing that the Navier-Stokes equations of fluid mechanics developed singularities. But someone from OpenAI might have peeked at their ChatGPT logs...

Congratulations to Dr Débora Mroczek for successfully defending her PhD thesis today! Her work built inference pipelines to extract the neutron star equation of state from data.

MUSES postdocs Isaac Legred and Mateus Reinke Pelicer led this hierarchal Bayesian analysis + ML to constrain particle and nuclear properties of the dense matter equation of state. Opening up such a large parameter space allowed the possibility of heavy neutron stars! arxiv.org/pdf/2607.13268

The US men's team looks totally different than in years past. They're playing with a confidence that I have never seen before. Coming back to score twice (granted one was offsides) after losing Balogun was incredibly impressive

Carli Lloyd to Clint Dempsey "On the women's side we didn't have too many number 9 issues" In response to Dempsey complaining that the men's team didn't have a good number 9 before Balogun. 🫠 Bit of an understatement given the existence of Mia Hamm :) Really glad for Lloyd's voice there.

What happens to science under autocracy? The rise of the National Socialist Party in 1930s Germany provides an (admittedly extreme) example. Prior to the early 1930s, scientists at German institutions won a third of Nobels. 10 years later, that number was 5%, and has never recovered.
