There are no fat grizzlies to vote for in Virginia, but there were plenty of black bears in the 17th century (and today)! John Smith recorded sightings of bears on his first voyage up the Chesapeake in June and July 1608.

The countdown is on for Virginia Archaeology Month! Every October, historic sites and cultural heritage organizations recognize the impact that archaeology has made on the story of our state and nowhere is that more relevant than Jamestown.

Thanks to the great @hcrichardson.bsky.social for writing about the burning of Jamestown in her Sep. 19 “Letters from an American!” This article does a great job of explaining the background and context of Bacon’s Rebellion and the burning of Jamestown 350 years ago: Sep. 19, 1676.

#OnThisDay in 1676: At dawn, Nathaniel Bacon and his forces find Jamestown empty. They occupied the capital, but news arrived of a loyalist force approaching from the north. With this force and Berkeley's navy on the water, Bacon and his men at Jamestown were trapped.

OTD in 1676: In the morning, Berkeley's officers began to try and convince him to abandon Jamestown. They had been embarrassingly beaten by the rebels in at least two skirmishes, their ships had retreated, and rumors swirled about a large force of rebels coming to reinforce Bacon's troops.

OTD in 1676: For two days, Bacon and Berkeley had been in a stand-off. On September 17, Bacon brought up three large guns and fired on the Governor's ships that had been lurking in the James River. He fired on Jamestown's fortifications, too, attempting to break them for a coming assault.

OTD in 1676: Nathaniel Bacon, along with about 150 of his men and 45 Pamunkey prisoners, arrived at Jamestown a day before and skirmished with Berkeley's soldiers near Glasshouse Point.

Yesterday in 1676: Virginia Governor Sir William Berkeley, after a stand-off and some convenient side-switching, sailed back into Jamestown to retake it from Bacon's rebels.

Hey @stephenking.bsky.social... We think you should totally write a horror novel set in Jamestown. Starving settlers, cannibalism, disease, warfare...we've got it all. If you pass, we'll try to get to Lin-Manuel Miranda with our other idea: "Jamestown! The Musical." Image: Jamestown Rediscovery.

Jamestown is a site of contradictions. In July 1619, the First Assembly met here and established a precedent for self-governance. Weeks later, the same men defied the law to enslave Africans who were trafficked to Virginia. Later, laws enshrining slavery in colonial America were passed here.

Happy World Chocolate Day to all who celebrate. Purely by coincidence, our archaeologists unearthed this rare artifact today. It's John Smith's candy jar, which he used to share sweets with other Jamestown settlers. Those Hershey bars are over 400 years old. And still delicious.
