Heard some favorite songs streaming Hardly Strictly Bluegrass last night and today: 1) "Crooked Tree" by Molly Tuttle - who also did a great cover of "Ohio" by CSNY (still a relevant protest song more than 50 years later) 1/4

MA Route 2 by Jason Harlow

Nobody drives 55 on Route 2,
a limit so rarely enforced it’s moot.
Cars hurtle along the highway heedless
of how fast they speed east toward Boston.
Roadkill carcasses sprawl on the shoulder,
spaced apart as if they were mile markers.
The traffic doesn’t slow until Concord,
the place our forebears first declared freedom
from royal rule. Ambushes with rifles
were prologue to our initial charter,
perhaps never tested how it is now
by leaders running roughshod past guardrails –
like me and these other drivers who care
above all else about getting somewhere.

"Waken" by Jason Harlow

May you wake to the world
as if sleeping in on a weekend
when morning light
steadily brightens your bedroom:
the birch outside the window
stipples its rice-paper shade
with leaf-shadow
from slim branches
that sway in the breeze.
And may such a mellow dawning
rouse you unalarmed,
coaxing your drowsy eyes open
how a water lily unfolds its bloom
on the surface of a pond –
ready to receive
what gifts the sun will bring,
the tidings arriving by wind.

A tribute to Michael Tilson Thomas (December 21, 1944 - April 22, 2026) #MTT #poetry
"MTT" by Jason Harlow

An expert
at conjuring Mahler
with orchestras
who followed his baton
died on Earth Day
and the morning after
he passed
I read how plants
can sense the sound
of rain,
seeds moved to sprout
from vibrations –
an actual Song of the Earth –
these distinct news items
a coincidence
whose import emerged
such that I could not
envision a better tribute
for the maestro
than fields growing anew
where before
there were only puddles
in the dirt
no one guessed
would give rise to
an eternal world.

"Bison" by Jason Harlow

The framed photograph of a bull bison
hangs above a roll-top desk where our son
in his high chair can see it while he eats:

tonight, hamburger mixed with puréed pears.
He waves at it, chewing meaty spoonfuls,
this image captured with a hunter’s eye.

The beast in profile stands on a dirt path
before a range of pine-forested hills.
A radio tower’s needle-thin spur

barely visible on a distant ridge
is the modern world’s only suggestion.
One day we will tell our son about food,

explain to him the source of much protein,
but withhold a few pertinent details –
blood and manure in a copious flow

powering agriculture’s massive wheel,
how a cow sometimes resists being milked
and will buck her hind legs or trample you.

Those we want him to learn when he’s ready
to choose his own food, maybe deciding
differently than we did on his behalf.
