The AL is such a mess this year. The Sox are in the last WC spot, but also only a game back from a first round bye. Over in the ALW, HOU/TEX are tied for the division lead with a record of 79-81. Unless one of them wins both of their final 2 games, the ALW winner will have a sub .500 record. Eww.

I know Assad has minor league options, and I know a lot of guys in the current bullpen don't. But he's pretty clearly one of the Cubs' best pitchers at this point. He's been consistently excellent whether starting or in relief. Stop yo-yoing this dude back and forth to AAA.

The Zeferjahn situation aside... The Cubs have to be the worst team in organized baseball at the whole "steal second to draw a throw and give the runner at third a chance to score" thing.

Hey, was literally just asking for this, this morning. Good stuff.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Braxton Garrett fares in his first few AAA outings. Tho I'm guessing he was primarily brought in as a 2027 rotation piece, he could be a big help to the MLB 'pen this year. Sadly, Thielbar isn't reliable anymore, and we could really use a solid LHP down there.

A lot of commentary about the prospects gave up yesterday, and I get it - the price was STEEP. But, also: Rojas: blocked as a starter at the MLB level until at least 2030, plus Pedro Ramirez exists. MoBaller: potentially a very good bat, but may not ever be an MLB C, plus Ayers exists.

This game certainly feels like it's headed toward a second consecutive really annoying finish.

Well that was annoying.

Ok, so not much new yesterday. How about today? Please? Anything?

We're 5 days from the deadline; would be really nice if rumors started picking up today. We got a smattering over the last few days - LAA GM sticking around, LAA open to moving detmers/soriano, NYY seeking RH bat, etc. - but not much w/ specifics aside from both chicago teams being in on detmers.

What a bummer of a way for Taillon's Cubs career to end. It was obviously time; he'd become unplayable. But he also delivered a lot of really good innings over the last few years and seemed to be nothing other than a stand-up dude and a stellar teammate. Best of luck to him in whatever's next.

JME @jmesnottweets.bsky.social · 27/07/2026
Just throwing it out there that the Cubs have a reasonable replacement for Taillon in-house, right now. IDK what Javier Assad did to continue getting kicked to the bullpen (or AAA), but he's gotten consistent results as a starter for 5 years (and the WHIP & K/BB rates have consistently improved)

I really wish the Cubs could've found a trade partner for Alcantara last year. He's been so underwhelming in MLB, I'm not sure he has much value left. Certainly not enough to return anything of real value. At this point it may be best to hold onto him and hope he can compete for a spot in 2027.

Misiorowski is missing his start today with "fatigue," has "not recovered well from his last start." Huh, it's almost as if throwing 105+ isn't sustainable.

It's in the 90s, muggy, and the wind (if it holds until gametime) will be blowing out at Wrigley. The Padres are starting a guy with a 7.38 ERA The Cubs have the homer-prone Imanaga on the mound (and a dumpster fire for a bullpen). The final score to this one's gonna look like a football score.

I'm already sick of both sides of the MLB vs. Players Union arguments. The league's proposal was so unserious - they knew there was no world in which the players would accept that. The Union's response was also pretty absurd, arguing a cap would destroy the free market. Bullshit.

Remember back when everyone was dragging folks for suggesting the Cubs should go after Zac Gallen because we already had so many starting pitchers? (I'm aware he's been very bad but, ya know... he's made almost all of his starts)

Being a Cubs pitcher is, statistically, the most dangerous job in the world (apparently). What the hell

JME @jmesnottweets.bsky.social · 23/06/2026
I've thought about this a lot lately. Regardless of what position the Cubs are in, in terms of playoff contention, come the deadline, they absolutely *have* to be buyers. Specifically of starting pitching. If the impending FAs walk & Rea's option isn't picked up, their 2027 rotation is...uh..barren

I could come up with a not entirely unreasonable argument about how the Cubs' underperformance has been exaggerated by bad luck, about why the offense is bound to turn around, about how winnable this division still is...

4th place, 6.5 games out of first, a month since they won their last series... Pretty soon the convo is going to change (if it hasn't already) from "What SP will the Cubs pursue at the deadline"? to "I wonder if we can get Happ and Suzuki to waive their no trade clauses to start the sell-off?"

I have tickets for tonight's game - the best seats I've ever had at Wrigley as a fan (worked on-field security in college; hard to top that view) - and it's going to be an absolutely gorgeous night, weather-wise. But after the last ~month, I barely even wanna go. Don't suck tonight, jerks.

Growing up, I remember hearing Pat Hughes say all the time that, "You're never as good as you look when you're winning, and you're never as bad as you look when you're losing," but holy jumping effing jesus the Cubs are pushing that to an extreme this year. What even is this team.

Looking back, May last year was way better than I remember. It was June when things turned frustrating last year. Still, since 2023... Yr | Mar/Apr | May '23 | 14-13 | 10-18 '24 | 18-12 | 10-18 '25 | 18-13 | 18-9 '26 | 19-12 | 13-16

It feels like every single year as of late, May is absolutely brutal for the Cubs. Thank god it's over. Split W L RS RA W-L% April 17 9 145 112 .654 May 13 16 115 131 .448 🤮

The $171M floor is great. Love it. But that cap... I know owners want to start the convo from a place where they can give up ground in negotiation and still be happy with the result, but... That cap is absurd. The players are going to *hate* that. A cap anywhere below ~$280-300M is absurd.

Given the clusterfuck that has been the 2026 Red Sox season, I wonder how long until they start being open to trade convos. I assume Tolle/Early are mostly untouchable, but they've almost certainly got to be open to hearing offers for Gray and Chapman, right?

Freddy Peralta is super interesting in that he'd probably come a bit cheaper than expected due to him seeing less-than-his-usual-stellar results, and the fact he's a FA after this yr. On the other hand...he's seeing less than his usual stellar results. But Clay Holmes... Gimme. I want.

What Murakami has been doing for the Sox is truly insane. Not just that he's leading MLB in HR - that's impressive to be sure - but what's truly mind blowing is that he's putting up the numbers he is (158 wRC+, 1.4 WAR) in spite of the fact he's still quite bad at making contact.

Ian's always had enough pop to hit his fair share of HRs, but what is going on this year? That's at least the second MONSTER bomb he's hit this season (not counting the wind-killed shot on opening day)

9th inning, up by 4...I think I just lose the DH and move Bregman to third.

Random thought on the ABS system. I (begrudgingly) accept it's going to take time to get to a full robo-ump situation. In the interim, I'd like to see them take an idea from the NFL. They instituted automatic replays in the final 2 mins of the game. I'd like to see that in the 8th/9th inning.

The Eric Byrnes CarShield ad that plays every damn commercial break on Marquee is brutal. Is he trying to look like Kid Rock? Is he on meth? What ad department/agency looked at that finished product and thought, "yeah, let's air this?"

So, either Amaya is hurt (which would be bad), or Counsell decided to pinch hit for him with Conforto in the 5th inning for no discernable reason (also not good). WTF?
