The remnants of Major Hurricane Polo will make for a soggy next couple of days here in West Michigan. By Friday morning, some areas could pick up as much as 2 inches of new rainfall, especially west of US-131.

Temperatures/dewpoints overnight drop to the lower/middle 40s with calm winds. That means we watch for areas of fog to develop Sunday morning. Localized areas of dense fog are possible, especially south and east of Grand Rapids. Use caution Sunday morning if traveling.

Radar around 12:30 PM is showing scattered showers, and even a thunderstorm near the Holland area, moving SW to NE. Severe weather is not expected, but localized brief heavy downpours will be possible through the afternoon and evening.

A better chance for thunderstorms, with some being potentially strong to severe, arrives later this evening and overnight. Damaging winds, lightning, and locally heavy rainfall are the main concern, though some large hail may be possible. Tornadoes are not expected.

We are monitoring some potential for severe weather as we look toward early next week. Still time for things to change, but definitely pay attention to the forecast over the next several days. #miwx #wmiwx

We're monitoring tomorrow for potential additional t-storm activity. While the primary severe weather risk is to our south, it is close enough that we'll be watching for any last-minute northward shifts that could bring low-end, isolated potential into our region.

Some school closures or delays will be possible on Wednesday morning, particularly across some of our northeastern areas, due to the potential for freezing rain creating very slick travel for the morning commute. Full discussion: westmichiganweather.net/closings

NCAR will not hold its Undergraduate Leadership Workshop this year. 😔 More opportunities lost for students. #SaveNCAR
Dear Colleagues,

I hope this email finds you well. I’m writing to share an update regarding the NSF NCAR Undergraduate Leadership Workshop (ULW).

The Undergraduate Leadership Workshop (ULW) will not run in 2026. This pause will allow us to thoughtfully update the program structure, curriculum, and develop new external partners so that ULW continues to provide a high-quality, impactful experience that meets the evolving needs of students and the university community.

Why this change and what it means for you and your students

Pausing ULW for 2026 allows us to:

Dedicate focused time to integrate evaluation feedback and make meaningful curriculum updates that better support the university community

Maintain high standards for student experience, engagement, and mentorship

Strengthen program alignment and operational sustainability across our educational offerings

As a result, faculty should not plan to nominate any students for ULW participation in summer 2026. Once we are ready to begin accepting applications again, we will post updated information on the ULW website and share announcements through UCAR Communications to ensure the community is fully informed.

We will continue supporting student development through our many student programs and partnerships. Our focus remains on fostering undergraduate and graduate engagement across the broader EdEC portfolio, including NESSI, GVP, and our expanding set of professional development initiatives.

Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting undergraduate leadership and development in the Earth system sciences. We appreciate your understanding as we take steps to strengthen ULW for the long term and look forward to working with you to make the 2027 program even more impactful.

If you have questions, or would like to provide input into the design effort, please reach out to ulw@ucar.edu. We value your input and want to ensure this transition supports both students and partner faculty.

Warm regards,

…

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Clare and Osceola counties, which goes into effect at midnight tonight and runs through 9 AM on Wednesday. This is for the potential of freezing rain, which may make for a slippery Wednesday morning commute.
