I assume you've read Jackson Benson's biography of Steinbeck. Amazingly thorough and fascinating. And here's the thing: I knew John Steinbeck had died two decades before I read that biography, but when I got to that page tears came to my eyes anyway.

Fantastic! Saturday night was steak and baked potato night when I was growing up. One night my younger brother took the foil off his potato, wadded it up, and for whatever reason tossed it straight up--where the ceiling fan knocked it right into the wastebasket.
