From my own anecdotal exprience, DnD persists only because of its weird sunk-cost cultural impact. Knowing DnD suddenly grants you access to an entire subculture of memes and jokes. This is exemplified by Thinger Strange blowing up 5e's popularity. Same goes for products like Pokemon and Warhammer.

Hasbro learned they're selling a culture. The product is just the price of admission into the "very cool kids group". It doesn't have the same consumption rate as something like MTG (which they've also enshittified, just differently). So they have to leverage new and exciting ways to extract value.

Yea, I've found the whole gratitude journal thing to feel a little too close to toxic positivity for my taste. I know what I'm grateful for, but there's a lot of other shit going on too. I don't find constantly focusing on those things (good or bad) super helpful.
