Lovely. It gets to the core issue. I think it is my favorite sign ever.

I have lived here since '94 and this is the first time I have ever heard any part of Seattle called Uptown. It was always Lower Queen Anne or Seattle Center.

Yes. My last dog used to hang out under the bed once I moved the crate out. Then when she got old I really regretted it because she would go under the bed to throw up. Moving the bed in the middle of the night to clean up was so fun. She was so worth it but a crate as safe place is easier.

Dogs. So many people think crates are cruel. My dog is past the time when I need to use it and I was thinking about storing it away. She just forced it open ( I had closed it while cleaning) because she just wants to hang in there.

I hate these “we don’t know why” answers. Everything. We are breaking everything. Every part of their life story is disrupted and another beautiful being is gone.

The poet, writer and monk Thomas Merton wrote a deliciously subversive "confession of crimes against the state" in 1960-- in middle of the Cold War, as the McCarthy era was just beginning to ebb, and the Vietnam War had already been underway for five years. He knew from jingoism. This is a treat:

There was an article somewhere about a white doctor in LA who was explaining the difference in how white people were treated for vein issues vs black people and why more black people end up with amputations. They aren't getting procedures they need. It was appalling.

Exactly. Also if we look at what the post 9/11 war in the Middle East created - a bunch of young people who violently hate the US - there will now be similar in Central and South America and again in the ME. Horrifying is exactly the word. It is why they are denying accurate history.

Back in the days when I was doing anti-death penalty work, one of the things I learned is that the rate of capital crime increases in the months following an execution. Also countries that had moratoriums on executions, saw in increase in capital crimes when it was lifted. Do as I do, not as I say.

I sort of get why people who moved across a vast ocean wanted to have some familiar plants. But why a bunch of European transplants thought Asian trees were somehow better than native ones is a mystery to me. Everything I have read about native chestnuts makes me miss them and I never saw one.

Finally updated my iPhone and can't for the life of me figure out what is so special about Apple liquid glass. I mean sometimes it looks cool but in the realm of actually improving my user experience, it does nothing to solve the problem that I really want to bury my phone in the backyard.

Yes and planting chestnut trees from somewhere else is what caused the problem in the first place.

In Seattle all food waste, including bones, go in yard waste and into commercial composting that is hot enough to handle it all. We have large bins with heavy lids and it is picked up weekly.

We need to promote the handful of ranchers who are doing predator friendly and ecosystem friendly practices. When they manage cattle like wild herds, they keep them together and move them as needed. This allows them to protect the herd, handle weather and illness [and birthing!] related problems.

Ran into someone I know and were talking while she said hi to my dog. We both looked across the street and did a double take because sitting on the sidewalk was what looked like a legal ballot drop box where there has never been one. How sad is it that we have to consider it is fake?

Reading through this thread is making me think about the first Earth day. About 10% of the US population marched that day and we got 7 significant pieces of federal legislation that made a huge difference. This admin is undoing that now. There needs to be one thing more people can rally around.

I have been thinking a lot about ancestral memory lately. Think about salmon coming back to rivers multiple generations couldn't use. Or think about people who seem to act out of trauma from their ancestors.

I think this is mostly true. My parents retired to CA and they met a couple. The man became dad's best friend and he said how lucky he was to have experienced that at his age [he would have been 60 when they met].

Rigth? My brother in CA got a milkweed plant and there was a caterpillar on it. It spun a cocoon and after it emerged and dried off it headed south towards the coastal meeting places. How does it know to do that? And then there are those iguanas that hatch by the snakes.... Nature just rocks.

Talk about a whole new perspective. I also took an ethics class and a history of the Third Reich. Both covered the topics in a more advanced way than HS did. Since my college was all engineering and science I think the extra classes brought a lot to our overall education. 2/2

Salmon and beavers have coexisted for millennia. Beavers showed up at a local park where I do Amphibian monitoring and I got to watch the salmon navigate the dam. It was a little more work but the upside is beavers created side pools without current and rocky bottoms ideal for spawning.

That land is vanishingly rare. I quit eating beef many years ago in part because ranchers wanted to close Teton National Park to hikers because they "scared the cattle". When the park was expanded existing grazing rights were maintained in those areas. Welfare Republicans consider OK.

I got in the habit of counting stairs when I had to carry my last dog up and down for a few years [old house, steep stairs, she decided she was done with them though could still hike for miles]. I still do it now and also am careful with foot placement. It has kept my knees healthier to do it slow.
