Released on this day in 1995 Joe's #albumoftheweek is Doe or Die, the debut album from AZ Doe or Die was a successful debut off the strength of the single Sugar Hill. AZ popped on the radar after featuring on the 1994 debut LP from Nas (Illmatic) & Nas returns the favor here, featuring on 2 tracks.

Set Fire to Flames is a thirteen-member ensemble who produced 2 albums of experimental & improvisational minimalist post-rock-ish recordings that include environmental sounds and ambient sections. The first album, Sings Reign Rebuilder, was released 25 years ago, & is Sean’s #albumoftheweek

For me, this was an album that was interesting to listen to once, but I don't see myself ever returning to it or any of the individual tracks. The last two tracks were probably the most interesting, but overall this album did not align with my musical tastes.

Final thoughts: I'm curious if their past efforts as the trio Injury Reserve sounds anything like this album now that they are duo. That's because it's a tough album to pigeonhole - it's sort of experimental, progressive Hip Hop? I can see why music nerds like Anthony Fantano are into this album.

First impressions through the first four tracks are love the beats, not a fan of the flows/vocals. I have to say something I say regularly on @2brosroadtripradio.bsky.social - I almost never get into lyrics unless I'm into the music first, so these first listens often ignore that component

Happy 75th birthday to Gordon Sumner, better known as Sting 🥳 Joe's #albumoftheweek is the 2007 Self-Titled Compilation from The Police. This compilation coincided with Sting, Stewart Copeland, & Andy Summers re-uniting & touring in 2007 & 2008 and as expected contains all of their hits.

Finished the album and it was a good listen. I was regularly impressed with the beats and melodies. The flows were fine. The hooks were a bit lacking or auto-tuned (😞). Getting a regular rotation track with STiGMA out of the listen was surprising, especially because it was not a hip hop track.

Joe Lowry @jlowry001.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

Next few tracks have been underwhelming, standard fare stuff with more auto-tuned choruses But out of nowhere, STiGMA, almost an interlude with a drum and bass feel that feels out of place, but it hits hard, gets IMMEDIATELY added to the regular rotation open.spotify.com/track/4O0QPH...

I had no idea what genre I was getting and it turns out it's hip hop The first real track (there's an intro style track), HALO, was an absolute banger but the chorus is an overly auto-tuned vocal, a huge pet peeve of mine. So close to being a regular rotation track open.spotify.com/track/1VsWBw...

The 2nd half of the album slowed down & there were more guitar-focused indie style tracks. The final track Euphoria had some Shallow vibes even if it might be more coincidence than cover. A good listen, was really taken in by the first 3 tracks but don't feel like I'll revisit the rest of the LP.

Halfway through & while there's not been any undeniable hits I've been into most everything I've heard. The energy has been sort of that chill dance feel, if that's a thing. Famous Last Words was the only miss of the first 4 tracks as it felt really focused on being more orchestral than pop.

Second half of the album, Talk To Me and Into The Sun were very solid tracks. The title track Sexistential had rap vocals that was a bit like a record scratch that didn't work for me. Overall, outside of the title track, I'm really happy I threw this LP on and would definitely listen to it again.
