[The invisible door parted to reveal an opening two stories tall and equal in width. Inside, she saw a small gathering– reporters, politicians, scientists, and even some children. They stood around a transparent case which would barely fit through the front door.
About a third of the case was occupied by a crude, bright blue likeness of the distal half of a human hand. It had been severed through the region where the metacarpals would have been in a real human skeleton. As she watched, several small puffs of white vapor burst from the base of the enclosure.
Charis sighed deeply, and moved toward the gathering and the case. She found the ordinary shipping label on the transparency.
It was labeled, “Hand of Brun”.
Charis promised herself for days that she wasn’t going to cry when she saw it again, but a tear escaped her eye and rolled down her cheek. The Commander shifted in his seat with discernable impatience, a very rare emotion among his kind.
“Now, Ka'l,” The Commander interrupted. “Order two of the reconnaissance ships to remain here to guard our route of retreat, until reinforcements arrive from—”
“I would really advise against—” the First began.
“NOW, KA'L!”

Our heroes' escape almost ends at the beginning.
[The trees around the aerolander fell back almost to the ground as the engines fired. The craft began to rise. In his rear vision, Ha’k saw the gargantuan black ovoid. Its snake-like arms were elevating a massive silver >tube< in their direction. Ha’k gritted his teeth, held his breath.
The craft was short of its trajectory transition, moving only vertically, when the enemy fired. The blast struck the rear energy screen at a slight angle, splayed off into a star-white fireball, which enveloped the aerolander and vaporized much of the forest beneath.
From the center of the defensive shield, a brilliant finger of plasma bled through, grazed across the aerolander’s back.
