Well, you are likely now committed a few more weeks of Tolkien, if you are limited to just LOTR. Back in the day (1966/7), I told friends that reading the first 50 pages of The Hobbit doomed them to read the other three books. Persons who opted out early escaped. Don’t show the movies!!!

Beat robophone spam! If you decide to pick up a call from a strange number, DON’T Speak First!! A robo system will recognize your response and send the call to a person who starts a taped message. However, if you don’t speak the robot will hang up. It’s your phone, polite is not required!!

Is the solution to RFK Jr’s problem with preventable diseases to give him some? Maybe mumps to start? I understand mumps in an adult male can be particularly painful. If the lesson is to support vaccination, Ebola is probably out of the question then. Although,

A real problem is how tenuous anyone’s grasp on life is in that prison. A nearly complete solution to DJT’s problem is for the man to die or further disappear. In that prison, not hard to accomplish. Since DJT is immune, some lawyer’s going to jail for conspiracy to commit murder (later).

A related topic: Nuclear Submarine makers have ads ON TV for welders. Will welders be very well paid to build future nuclear deterrence?? Will they import welders? Is that a good idea? CE, B&W, Westinghouse, GE, among other US companies offered 1000 mw nuke plants in 1965; no US co. will today.

When current US nuclear power plants needed parts (reactor vessel head, steam generator (s)) in the ‘90s no US facility could produce the required objects. The Rx head came from Japan, the SG from Korea.

However, if you’re a religious cultist who sacrifices the life their 8 yo child for religion, all those men say “Meh”. Pregnancy complications, jail time; human sacrifice for religion, just fine, not a word said. Texas: back to the 18th century, and beyond!!!

when the fiscal climate was right has contributed to perhaps millions of extra or premature deaths in the intervening 47 years. For people who don’t like fracking, natural gas power plants, filling the nuke void, have increased demand for nat gas which fracking them supplied.

The failure of utility companies and regulators to properly operate existing nuclear power plants (allowing the TMI accident) and the further failure to complete ordered units, innovate new reactor designs, and order new reactors

Coal mines continued to operate, poisoning communities and killing miners. People living near coal plants continued exposure to mercury and ash! Then there are ash pond dam collapses that can cause widespread environmental damage.

You could really go back to ‘79 and TMI. There may have been 30 to 50 nuclear plant units, in various stages of planning and construction canceled. Whatever else may be true, 50,000 Mwatts of fossil fuel generation continued to operate and more was built.

Funding safety training faces this same problem: if the training is successful, bad things don’t happen. You’re asking managers to pay for things not happening. They must be forced to see the value of non-events.

SECOND MEASLES DEATH REPORTED The Texas legislature and the Texas Governor are implicitly granting religious fringe groups the right to threaten or kill other people’s children. Is there another area where religiously sanctioned human sacrifice is allowed or even encouraged by the state?

jjherb.bsky.social @jjherb.bsky.social · 28/12/2024
Most discussions of electricity production and climate change do not include “capacity factor”. This is the percentage of time power is available from a source. Solar = 25%, wind turbines = 35%, US nuclear plants in 2023 = 93.1%. The American consumer is unlikely to accept intermittent power.

A new generation of 50 Mwatt nuclear power plants on the grid but serving data centers may be an answer to reliable electricity for all. 2000 50 Megawatt nuclear plants equals today’s installed nuclear capacity.

jjherb.bsky.social @jjherb.bsky.social · 28/12/2024
Conservatives want free market, unregulated energy production and distribution which leads to no one being responsible for delivering power. Climate activists demand use of the least reliable sources of power. At the same time, data centers are set to DOUBLE the national demand for power.

jjherb.bsky.social @jjherb.bsky.social · 28/12/2024
For a really long time reliability of electricity supply was THE major concern of both electricity supply companies and regulators at all levels. It is interesting that both ends of the political spectrum are actively working against that idea.

Traditional “liberal arts” education has been increasingly rejected, even by educators, for lack of utility. Apparently the idea of creating good people, rather than useful cogs, has died.
000
jjherb.bsky.social @jjherb.bsky.social · 28/12/2024
Many individuals reject training/education on the basis of current utility. Why they think they are in any way qualified to decide that is a mystery. Formal industrial training content is based on analysis; you should get exactly only what you need.

jjherb.bsky.social @jjherb.bsky.social · 28/12/2024
The question of creating lifelong learners seems unrelated to college; you may have a better chance, but not guaranteed. I posit the paradigm people have for “education” (eg high school) inhibits learning. They reject the form and too strongly dismiss the result. Will the home schooled do better?
100
jjherb.bsky.social @jjherb.bsky.social · 28/12/2024
Safety training is required by OSHA, but the effectiveness is reduced by state administration. Generally, American industry is not interested in training at all. In fact, the H1B visas prove that. American companies could train American workers to perform the exact tasks needed, but they don’t.

30 years as an Industrial Trainer says maybe. Formal, documented training, both initial and continuing, is required for all Maintenance and Operations personnel at nuclear power plants. The result of bitter experience. In other industries, the level of training is variable. Little is required.

Between the ages of 6 and 14 a man in our church choir, Roy Mast, sang “Oh Holy Night” so well (each year) it led me to dream of doing a similar performance myself. The voice needed did not follow the dream! Hearing a good rendition fills me with memories of Christmas joy and personal inadequacy.
