Foliage and greenery is much delayed in Winnipeg this year thanks to continued colder than normal weather this spring. Here's a comparison around today in 2024, 2025 and 2026. Barely anything yet this year, while trees were flowering today in 2024 and 2025 (which was a bit earlier than average)

Another colder than normal April in Winnipeg... 10 of the last 15 Aprils were colder than normal. Highlights of the month included a funnel cloud at Anola Apr 15 and an unusually strong April thunderstorm on Apr 22 thanks to abnormally high humidity (dewpoints of 11-14c).

Probably not as bad as 2013 since we already lost most of our snow. We started the month with about 40 cm on the ground in residential areas back then, but this month I have maybe 5 cm on average in my yard. We just need to avoid snowstorms the next couple weeks... Winter won't be in a rush to leave

March 2026 will go down as very unmemorable in Winnipeg. Although it was definitely colder than normal compared to recent normals (2°C below normal), comparing historically (since 1870s) it was actually very typical with very unremarkable rankings.

Climatological winter 2025-2026 (Dec to Feb) was pretty average overall in Winnipeg, but there wasn't as much extreme cold as normal. Only 6 days dipped below -30°C and only 6 days had wind chill of -40, both half of normal. There was a bit more snow than normal as well, coming in at 32nd snowiest.

It was a mild February in Winnipeg, averaging about 3°C above normal and tied 22nd warmest since 1873. For only the 21st time, temperatures did not reach -30°C. Snowfall was around average.

An unremarkable January in #Winnipeg weather-wise. It was colder relative to recent years but historically average. The only thing that stood out was the rain in the first half of the month. 7 days had rain or freezing rain/drizzle. 1-2 mm fell in the city, but 3-5 mm fell north and east of city.

Impressive freezing rain rates in the Winnipeg area since 11:30am... As much as 2 mm in an hour at Beausejour and Lac du Bonnet. The Forks in Winnipeg recorded 1.0 mm in only 18 minutes. These are certainly near record rates for January. And still falling north and east of the city.... #mbstorm

July was the smokiest month on record in Winnipeg with 189 hours of smoke at the Airport. Temperatures were average, but it was much drier than normal. It was also the driest January to July on record at the Airport with 126mm of precip. Normal is close to 300mm

June was very dry and historically smoky in Winnipeg. 81 hours of smoke at the Airport was easily a record since 1953. Rainfall varied from 20 mm in western parts of the city to 60 mm in eastern parts, but the 23 mm at the Airport was the driest in over 50 years (since 1974).

It was the 6th warmest May since 1872 in Winnipeg with a mean temperature of 14.7°C, 3.6°C above normal. Note we just had the 2nd warmest May two years ago in 2023. Measurable rain fell on only 3 days, the fewest in over a century. It was also the 3rd consecutive May to be in the top 5 smokiest.

It was the warmest first two weeks of May on record in Winnipeg since 1872, beating 1977. This was the case for both mean temperature and average daily high temperature. Note that the month overall won't be nearly as impressive due to colder weather starting tomorrow.

A very average April in Winnipeg, but dry. Less than half the normal precipitation fell. If April felt warm, it was only because we had so many cold ones in the past decade that we've forgotten what's normal.

A mild March overall in Winnipeg with average snowfall. Most of the winter snow pack was gone by mid March. Note that the Weatherlogics snow measurement site is in southwestern parts of the city where amounts were lower in last week's event. North and east parts of the city received over 20 cm.

Southwestern Manitoba had a much colder winter than Winnipeg. Brandon had 21 days below -30c and the mean temperature of -15.7c was almost two degrees colder than Winnipeg. Regina was also colder with 17 days below -30 and a mean temperature of -15.2c. They had their 15th coldest February.

It was generally another mild meteorological winter in Winnipeg, but much colder than last year. The worst cold snap was in February. Snowfall was around normal, but most of it fell in December. It was also windier than normal, tied 6th windiest winter since 1953.

At almost 2 degrees below normal, February was the most colder than normal month since April 2023 in Winnipeg, which shows the impressive warm streak we've had the past couple years. It was also the coldest month in 3 years, since February 2022. February was also very dry with half the normal snow.

January was a roller coaster ride of temperatures in Winnipeg, but was very average by 21st century norms. However, it was the first time since 1872 that we had two consecutive Januarys with one or fewer days below -30°C. There were far more days below -30°C in southwestern Manitoba (9 in Brandon).

Those were quite some winds in southern Manitoba yesterday... Widespread gusts of 90 to 100 km/h through south-central Manitoba. Winnipeg Airport gusted to 87 km/h, the strongest gust in January since 2009 (though 85 km/h was recorded during a blizzard on Jan 12, 2017)

An interesting aspect of 2024 also was the frequency of thunderstorms. The 31 thunderstorm days at the Airport was the most since 2007. Note how we seem to be finally ending a long stretch of quiet years from 2008 to 2021 where almost every year had fewer t-storms than normal.

2024 goes down as the 2nd warmest year on record since 1872 in Winnipeg with a mean temperature of 5.4°C. Only two other years, 1987 and 1931, averaged over 5°C (also El Nino years). Every month except June (only 0.6°C below normal) was warmer than normal.

Most parts of the city actually would be considered rainiest November. The forks had about 69 mm of rain while amounts as high as 70-75 mm fell in southeastern parts of the city. I measured 74.7 mm in Southdale.

It’s a correction for “calendar day”. The snow began 2am Nov 22, but in the EC Archives the daily snowfall is entered on the 21st because of a 6am-6am “climate day”.
