20 Years Later, Pittsburgh Dykes Keep Marching On
The first Dyke March in the United States was held in 1993 in Washington, D.C. by political organizers such as the Lesbian Avengers, as a way to speak out against lesbian erasure and other intersectional issues within the larger queer rights movement. The message spoke to the 20,000 people who attended that year, and sparked other Dyke Marches across the country, including in Philadelphia, Chicago, and New York City.

Kathi Boyle, Former Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force Leader Who Expanded HIV Services Across Communities, has Passed Away
Kathi Boyle, a longtime human services leader whose work helped expand HIV/AIDS services in Western Pennsylvania beyond the populations initially served during the epidemic's earliest years, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2026. Boyle is perhaps best remembered for her leadership at the Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force (PATF), now known as Allies for Health + Wellbeing, where she helped guide the organization through a period of growth and transformation. Founded in 1985 during the height of the AIDS crisis, PATF emerged to provide support, housing assistance, prevention services, and advocacy for people living with HIV/AIDS at a time when stigma, discrimination, and inadequate government responses left many community members without support.

After Catena Controversy, Allegheny County Council Chooses Michelle Naccarati-Chapkis as President
Allegheny County Councilwoman Michelle Naccarati-Chapkis was elected president of Allegheny County Council on Tuesday, formally replacing Pat Catena after weeks of escalating political fallout surrounding anti-trans campaign rhetoric that triggered widespread public backlash and ultimately forced Catena from council leadership. Art as Liberation: How Dreams of Hope Nurtures Queer Futures
Dreams of Hope is a queer arts organization centering queer youth and empowering them through various art forms. Through the power of the arts, Dreams of Hope provides the region’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, and allied (LGBTQIA+) youth a welcoming environment to grow in confidence, express themselves, and develop as leaders. In 2003, Susan Haugh, now an emeritus board member, founded the organization after recognizing the need for creative outlets and positive queer role models for the youth of Pittsburgh. She invited youth to choose a name and for 23 years, Dreams of Hope has been providing a welcoming, creative environment for queer and Trans young people.

It doesn't take long for Melissa Etheridge to feel like an old friend. Seconds into our latest conversation, she's already asking what I think of her new album — “Rise,” her first in seven years — and within moments we're deep into the kind of conversation that makes you forget you're supposed to be conducting an interview. That's always been our history. Seven years is a long time. Long enough to grieve, to rebuild, to sit with loss until it becomes something you can sing about. For Etheridge, “Rise” is that album — the one that had to wait until she had the words.

BREAKING: Brittany Bloam Defeats Pat Catena After Anti-Trans Mailer Controversy
Brittany Bloam appeared headed to victory Tuesday night in the Democratic primary for Pennsylvania House District 45, defeating Allegheny County Council President Pat Catena after weeks of escalating controversy surrounding Catena’s anti-trans campaign mailers. As of publication, unofficial election returns showed Bloam leading Catena with approximately 58% of the vote to Catena’s 41%, according to Allegheny County election results. Additional ballots remained outstanding Tuesday evening, though Bloam’s lead appeared increasingly difficult to overcome. Bloam’s apparent victory follows a bitter and increasingly public primary fight that transformed the District 45 race into one of the most closely watched local Democratic contests in Allegheny County.

Political fallout surrounding Allegheny County Council President Pat Catena continued escalating Monday after TransYOUniting publicly rejected a $500 donation sent by Catena following widespread condemnation of his anti-trans campaign mailer targeting Democratic primary opponent Brittany Bloam. In a statement released ahead of Tuesday evening’s planned County Council protest and public comment session, the organization accused Catena of attempting to smooth over public harm without taking meaningful accountability for rhetoric they say contributed to ongoing attacks against trans people. “You do not get to attack trans people publicly, contribute to dangerous narratives, and then attempt to smooth it over without ever speaking to the people impacted by your actions,” the organization wrote.
