But that creates a perverse incentive for elderly people to *upsize* to save IHT. That could double the cost of the policy, and push £100bn+ from savings into housing. A 🧵 on bad tax cuts. 20306128

Jim Prescott @jimprescott.bsky.social · 06/10/2026False eq. is SA, which was never abolished, it just changed its constitution in 1996 (and not even for the first time). Israel's formation has nothing to do with the post you countered, namely that Israel won't voluntarily abolish itself and thus it would require military intervention to achieve. 100
Jim Prescott @jimprescott.bsky.social · 06/10/2026You need to have a rant about something when you're going to be out of power for at least a decade. 000
Jim Prescott @jimprescott.bsky.social · 06/10/2026That's quite a false equivalence. South Africa's constitution changed, but the nation state's the same. You may as well suggest that post Jim Crow US was different nation state. As for Germany, well military conquest and in particular occupation by the USSR led to the 2 states in the first place. 100
Jim Prescott @jimprescott.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Case in point: today's news of BT's rescue deal for TalkTalk, 5 years after a leveraged buyout that ended up more than doubling its debts to c£1.5bn. LBOs, along with their public sector cousin PFI are some of the worst examples of the neoliberal prioritisation of profit over true economic benefit. 000
Jim Prescott @jimprescott.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Very bad AI at that. Apparently there are a lot of near identical twins, even identical triplets! Also, I'm guessing they wouldn't do a critical poster that didn't include the sitting Primer Minister. 010
Jim Prescott @jimprescott.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Indeed. And the Irish point is a total false equivalence. No-one is currently suggesting that supporting the Irish status quo is racist or asking for it to be Green Party policy. The Green Party in NI supports self determination on the Island of Ireland as per the Good Friday Agreement. 030
Jim Prescott @jimprescott.bsky.social · 04/10/2026The billionaire tech bros might not want AI to be regulated but I was advised by AI itself that regulation "is essential to prevent existential risks". Even their own AI bots don't trust them... 010
Jim Prescott @jimprescott.bsky.social · 04/10/2026This wasn't Klein, it was AI generated, although Klein says she thought she might have she'd said it "because I have said things very similar". It's truly ironic because the quote itself demonstrates the very issue being pointed out in the quote. 010
Jim Prescott @jimprescott.bsky.social · 03/10/2026No it isn't. Mortgage is a secured loan with house as collateral but you have liability. If there's negative equity (eg market falls) YOU are the one on the hook. If repossessed, you still owe any shortfall. With LBO the private equity isn't liable for debts or losses if the corporation goes bust. 000
Jim Prescott @jimprescott.bsky.social · 02/10/2026It's bit like taking out a buy to let mortgage in the name of the house you are renting out rather than in your own name. 170
Jim Prescott @jimprescott.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Nothing to do with being a dummy, I have a degree in economics and MBA and it still astounds me that businesses can effectively be bought utilising leverage against the very business being bought. Leveraged buyouts are possible because corporations are treated as legal entities. 1120

Jim Prescott @jimprescott.bsky.social · 28/09/2026When Jeremy Hunt made two populist 2% cuts in NI in 6 months - that we now know to have been completely unsustainable & uncosted - where was the right wing media pearl clutching or the constant BBC questions about "how are you paying for this"? The media in the UK is a right wing stitch up. 010
Jim Prescott @jimprescott.bsky.social · 28/09/2026If Starmer/Reeves or Burnham/Healey had been in charge in 1945, there'd have been no NHS, and no massive housebuilding programme. It's not "Fiscal discipline" to stick to a bunch of made up neoliberal rules, ostensibly designed by a Chancellor whose programme was built on an error in a spreadsheet. 011
Jim Prescott @jimprescott.bsky.social · 28/09/2026The lack of withholding tax on these dividends at least on a par with the US is absolutely scandalous - in the US Swiss investors would pay 15% under their double taxation treaty 010

Jim Prescott @jimprescott.bsky.social · 27/09/2026It was totally unsurprising how frequently she interrupted Burnham, while allowing Philp to spout his evidence free bollocks - eg. he said we're a high tax economy when virtually the entire continent of Europe has a higher tax wedge than us - and yet not even the slightest challenge. #BBCLauraK 290
Jim Prescott @jimprescott.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Laura keeps banging on about all these economists calling for cuts. Plenty of economists fully understand the benefits of government stimulus and also appreciate how the economy was skewered by Tory austerity - which is why so many opposed it. #BBCLauraK 051

Jim Prescott @jimprescott.bsky.social · 19/09/2026I remember a story about teenagers who started saying things were "book" rather than "cool" because in the early days of keypad texting, book was the default predictive text if you pressed 2-6-6-5 and of course teens are notoriously lazy. Jim Prescott @jimprescott.bsky.social · 19/09/2026The fluidity of English I guess. Weirdly, the American "dove" (past tense of dive) sounds completely wrong to me, it has to be dived. My pet hate is the TV habit of putting -ness at the end of everything - so you have tenaciousness instead of tenacity etc. Eventually it'll become acceptable. 210
Jim Prescott @jimprescott.bsky.social · 19/09/2026I concur (similar education timeline). Personally I say strove, strived just doesn't sound right to me even though it is fine. Striven is definitely the past participle - one wouldn't say "I striven" it even sounds wrong, whereas "I have striven" works. 210
