Seven years of alleged abuse. Three women. 2.5 million files. We don't know who, if anyone, knew. But men must speak up when other men demean women. Silence can normalise attitudes that should never be acceptable. #auspol

‘We’ve got our own people’: One Nation won’t submit policies for budget costing
The populist right-wing party says it won’t submit policies for budget costing ahead of the NSW election despite pressure from Labor and the Coalition.

Queensland's tobacco crackdown is showing results: legal sales rose 40–45% above baseline, and $100m in extra tax revenue is projected over two years — potentially covering enforcement costs. Evidence that tackling the black market needn't mean cutting excise. #auspol

How do you prevent people abusing an exemption with smart glasses without making legitimate users prove their disability every time they need access? Guide-dog and assistance-dog rules provide a useful example of how the law can balance those interests. #auspol

That's fair — MRP needs a larger sample and takes longer to analyse. But also — a month ago.

Announcing a policy, implementing it, & demonstrating a worthwhile result. Medicare Urgent Care Clinics, Reversing the decline in bulk-billing access, Home solar and battery program, Early childhood educator pay and workforce support. And now "cracked housing affordability" #auspol

The evidence supports Fortescue as pursuing a serious industrial decarbonisation programme but yes, there are significant execution risks. It does not, by itself, establish that the programme is greenwashing. Ambitious targets and substantial investment is what we need, surely.

Fortescue seems to be one of the few mining companies that's actually trying to help solve the #climate crisis. They're using #renewables on their mines rather than buying off-sets. #mining #Auspol

2/2 Your concern about AI displacing workers & concentrating income is legitimate. But that's a question of how productivity gains are distributed, not whether productivity gains exist. More output with fewer inputs is still a productivity gain. Whether society benefits depends on what happens next
000
Jim Pembroke @jimpembroke.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
1/2 You're conflating competitive advantage with productivity, then productivity with employment. If Australia and NZ both produce 2% more per hour, neither gains a relative advantage, but both can still be better off. More value from the resources available.

Australia's rooftop solar revolution. And it's not just households. Add commercial rooftops and batteries, and the potential is enormous. This quiet revolution deserves more credit. #auspol www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Our place in the sun: Australia’s uptake of solar panels is already through the roof. How much higher could it get?
Sunshine, government subsidies and high power prices are driving record solar installations

Trump administration's corruption has become so public, persistent and entangled with the presidency itself that it is increasingly difficult to treat each revelation as an isolated scandal. But here's one. #auspol

Possibly. They could be trying it on with the Tassie govt who have been very keen to attract their share of data centres.
000
Jim Pembroke @jimpembroke.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
Yours was a complex claim. I was referring to Australians making a casual link between the above and services being cut. And the obvious tension between Australian's dislike for Trump and still supporting the alliance. But I get that conflating these things is popular on Bluesky.

Jim Pembroke @jimpembroke.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
Not sure who "they" are but that is maybe a separate issue. Australia has had data centres since the 1960's. Hyperscalers is new. Need tight regulation.

000
Jim Pembroke @jimpembroke.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Sure but they still need backup power. Firmus is a different case though. They seem to want to use the diesel for more than backup. And why this backup issue needs to be tightly regulated.
100
Jim Pembroke @jimpembroke.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Even the Greens are not saying "Just no." They want to slow development down until proper regulation. I think backup power issue should be regulated.

Jim Pembroke @jimpembroke.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
It may be that there isn't any practical alternative to diesel backup but operators should make that case and then data centres located accordingly.

The last is correct but as all the polling shows Australian's still support the U.S alliance. So as to the first claim, you must know most Australian's outside of Bluesky don't give it two thoughts. I hope Green's vote improves. But if it does, it won’t be cos Australians want less security.
110
Jim Pembroke @jimpembroke.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Another perspective: The more capable Australia becomes in its own right, the more meaningful its choices within the alliance become.
000
Jim Pembroke @jimpembroke.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Any evidence the US can use Australian bases without Australia's consent? The risk of being drawn into a conflict is real, but that's an argument for transparency and retaining sovereign control—not for assuming we've already surrendered it. Trump didn't like it, but we said no to Iran, right?
000
Jim Pembroke @jimpembroke.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
The weird thing Peggy. Those who want us to reduce our dependence on the U.S, simultaneously question to any capability that could be seen as moving in that direction.
121
Jim Pembroke @jimpembroke.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Yes, let's start with Cocos Islands. Is there any evidence Australia has ceded control of this facility to the US?
141
Jim Pembroke @jimpembroke.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
I get that— but I would also like to see serious discussion from the Left about the risk at the fed election in 2 yrs if Labor shut down coal and gas without a global phase-out plan. Would Labor be voted out— all climate gains reversed? But then I guess the left could blame Labor for the set back?

Australia cannot sensibly make the possibility of upsetting China the test of whether it should improve its own defence capabilities. But yes, we should consider whether the capability serves Australia's interests, and whether the government retains meaningful control over how it is used.

I think it's the uncertainty around this increase that needs explanation— illness and medical conditions, neglect or abuse, suicide, unexpected infant deaths, system failures or missed opportunities. I agree. They absolutely have to acknowledge the issue, explain it and offer a solution.
