With very few exceptions, if an account, generally political, follows more than 20k other accounts, I automatically block them if they follow me or I run across them on the timeline. These accounts aren't "fighting the good fight", they're just noise machines farming engagement.

I've tried to explain that if a woman needs help in a scary situation, my job isn't to get her to trust me, it's to find solutions for her where she doesn't *have* to completely trust me to escape the situation. Stay in public, help her contact friends, etc.

When we tell women in gaming (and society in general) "just grow a thicker skin" what we're really saying is: "Adjust your perception of what counts as an attack, so most of them now 'don't count'." And now we're off the hook for changing the culture. This works for other targeted groups as well.

And right now they're doing that to a lot of "normal accounts". They see lurkers who occasionally repost stuff and like things in their feed as "inauthentic behavior" trying to game their system of bots and bigots. That's how they got me, just reposting and liking game dev stuff I saw.

The contrast between In-N-Out and any other fast food place as far as how many workers are in the store at a time is stunning. Outside of fast food, I've been in a 60,000 sq. ft. dollar store with 2 people working, and 1 was stuck in the back accepting a truck shipment.

Good practice for when you need to make quick pitches on links to your own projects: When you're posting memes/cool stuff where somebody needs to follow a link or hit "play" on a video, give a quick reason why it will be worth it for them. Pierce through the info/link overload we all face.

I think another factor is that it may technically be within the total lumen limit, but with much smaller frontal areas allowed for headlights, the amount of light per unit surface area hitting your retinas now really really hurts compared to it being spread out more.

And the danger here is that negative posting tends to get the most response, so if you start leaning into that, even subconsciously, it can really poison the well for what you're actually trying to do. Occasional complaints is perfectly human, just be aware of the social incentives that happen.

Almost every "How do I network?" question can be answered by thinking about how you'd like other people to interact with you and help you out. Can never go wrong advocating for others and boosting their signal. Even if that person can't reciprocate, that energy reaches others and comes back to you.

In streaming, my usual advice for networking is to simply be the kind of person in other peoples' streams that you'd like to have in your own. 80% of that is talking with other people in chat, not *just* engaging with the streamer. Keep things active, answer questions, appreciate the mods, etc.
