Some recent well performing Short-toed Eagles as they reach the Spanish mainland from Morocco.

One morning off from rain and the Short-toed Eagles took their chance. I conservatively marked 380 but I'm sure thousands crossed the Strait today. Also, 300 Black Kites, one Alimoche, two Osprey.

I stopped off at Le Teich, near Bordeaux on my ride south. The Night Herons are in the exact same trees as 5 years ago. Both times I've been here have been very wet with intermittent sunshine.

A visit to Seaford and Cuckmere on a sunny day before the rainy season commences for Snow Bunting and Goosander (3 in total).

I went to visit the Pied Wheatear at Seaford yesterday. For 4.5 hours. Weather was nice or I wouldn't have stayed so long.

I've visited two local rarities so far this November. Simon's Pied Wheatear at Seaford and the Rose-coloured Starling at St Mags., directly after disembarking at Dover. Unhappily, I missed the Bell Tout Desert Wheatear at one oh my regular patches by two days. 🫥

This morning's offerings are Lapland Bunting and Rough-legged Buzzard in place of the Richard's Pipit which seems to have finally left.

Jim Dee @jimmydeebirder.bsky.social · 23/10/2024
Just about managed to photograph the Richard's Pipit that's been sneaking around for about 5 days in Southern Öland. Also today, Rough-legged Buzzards and White- tailed Eagles.

Unlike last week's bird which took 90 minutes to locate amongst a similarly large flock (a3000) of Barnacle Geese, this Red-breasted Goose took just a few minutes on both occasions. The Twite (padding) are from a group of 46 that were in the Northern Cape area on 18th October.

Jim Dee @jimmydeebirder.bsky.social · 20/10/2024
Had a second look at the Asian Deaert Warbler in Sweden this morning as not much else around. One RLB. 46 Twite yesterday.

Another day of wonder on Öland. Black Kite, 2 RBF, 1 YBW, 3 Purple Sand, 2 Hen Harrier, 7 RLB, 5 Scaup, 2 Woodcock, minimums of 7500 barnacle Geese and 6000 Eider plus a mixture of other ducks. Also 4 PF Geese. Photos still poor. Hopefully that will change soon.

The last week has been a Goosefest with large numbers of Barnacle and WF Geese. Tundra and Taiga Bean can be found, but today 30+ RLBs were seen in Southern öland. Also, some caudatus LT Tit elsewhere, with late Spot Fly and Redstart. 2 Lapland Buntings yesterday.

Yesterday started off with 2 Pallas's and a Dusky Warbler(s) by 0830, but then the rain came. Tens of thousands of geese and 1000s ofCranes didn't mind. White-fronted and Barnacle continue to join yesterday's arrivals, with hundreds of Tundra Bean Geese alongside them.

Just tried using Merlin on two Pallas's Warblers calling to each other at Ottenby. It didn't suggest anything.

Jim Dee @jimmydeebirder.bsky.social · 08/10/2024
A Dusky Warbler was found a km away from where I was searching. Had nice views but no blurry shots to share. Also today; Shore Lark, Woodcock, 2 Tundra Bean, 50 White Fronted Geese, a Pallas's Warbler, Jack Snipe, Hen harrier, 40Woodlark, Redstart, Fieldfare and 5 Purple Sand.

Jim Dee @jimmydeebirder.bsky.social · 07/10/2024
Managed to see 3 of the 4 - 5 Pallas's Warblers at Ottenby today. A few hundred Goldcrest + some Firecrest fell to Earth after a mid-morning shower. Later in the day, 2 Great Grey Shrike sat up the road. Need a proper camera asap.

Another interesting morning in Sweden when some Swiss birders found a Hume's Warbler with 2 YBW in the vicinity. Also; Goshawk, Golden Eagle, Black Woodpecker, Redstart and 1000 Barnacle Geese. Goshawk vs Sparrowhawk was interesting, the Goshawk allowing substantial haranguing.

Two of us spend a couple of hours trying to see if a newly arrived Ross's Goose was ringed or not. There was an orange ring on one leg. Other birds of note today; RLB, Hen Harrier and Kingfisher.

Another day, another YBW (or possibly two), on Öland. But what isn't every day, is an Otter in the woods at just four metres! It didn't see us for a while. Photo by Gabriel Säll. Also today; 1 RLB, juv Hen Harrier, Cranes, and a likely RTP calling as it passed overhead.
000
Jim Dee @jimmydeebirder.bsky.social · 01/10/2024
The day began with about 1500 Goldcrest dripping from the woods, and ended with them around our feet in the gardens. Somewhere in between, I managed to locate a YBW within a further 200+ Goldcrest, plus a LSW showed up briefly. But what might the Yellow Wagtail subspecies be?

Jim Dee @jimmydeebirder.bsky.social · 30/09/2024
7 Rough-legged Buzzards so far today, 2 Honey Buzzards, plus Hen Harrier, Goshawk, Hawfinch, Woodlark. Cranes (pictured) from yesterday. Finch migration only a small % of yesterday but with no wind to speak of, nice conditions for a search.

Jim Dee @jimmydeebirder.bsky.social · 29/09/2024
Awesome day of migration today on Öland; Pec Sand, YBW, RLB, Black Kite, 15 Hawfinches, 1000s finches, and then, this evening, I could no longer hide from the Brown Booby. Photo by Gabriel Säll.

Jim Dee @jimmydeebirder.bsky.social · 27/09/2024
My first full day on Öland has been fun, Red Backed Shrike, a Moose, 100s Cranes, barnacles Geese and 4 Woodlark plus news that the Brown Booby is hot on my trail. And it's been very nice to meet up with an old friend from my last trip. Weather forecast isn't so promising atm.

A "quiet" day by Falsterbo standards so just 11 raptor species, but the fun ones were a male Hen Harrier which migrated South then returned 15 mins later before migrating once more with a female Pallid Harrier. 26 Cranes that weren't sure what to do, went S, N, S, N then S.

Jim Dee @jimmydeebirder.bsky.social · 16/09/2024
There was an Icelandic Black-t Godwit at Nabben, Falsterbo today, although it got away before I could take a photo. Other birds: 1 Osprey, 3 HB, 1-2 WTE, a couple of Barnacle Geese, so quieter than recent days. Spotshanks still delight. And yesterday's juv Crane with a Heron.

Jim Dee @jimmydeebirder.bsky.social · 15/09/2024
Finally saw a share of the Lesser Spotted Eagles at Falsterbo this morning. 3 out of a total of 5 seen. Hundreds of Red Kite and Buzzard also crossing or thinking about moving. Other highlights: a White-tailed Eagle, 1 Black Kite, 3 Great White Egret North and 43 Cranes South.
