Jim Moskowitz @jimmosk.bsky.social · 07/10/2026My hobby: whenever someone uses 'compute' as a noun to refer to computational power or time, changing it in my mind to 'compote'. "In addition to achieving what was widely thought to be impractical, they did it on a budget: using only thousands of dollars worth of compote." 120

Jim Moskowitz @jimmosk.bsky.social · 07/04/2026(2 of 2) Given the wording in the President's post, "A whole civilization will die tonight", I went to look up that legend. It turns out the king was Croesus, and the empire he attacked was... Persian. 052
Jim Moskowitz @jimmosk.bsky.social · 07/04/2026(1 of 2) So, I've long known about the ancient Greek... legend? verified fact?... that a king asked the oracle at Delphi if he would be successful in an attack he was planning, and was told that if he attacked, "a great empire will fall", only to have it turn out to be his own empire. 153
Jim Moskowitz @jimmosk.bsky.social · 24/03/2026[I'm limiting this modest proposal to 'normal' votes cast on or received by Election Day. Exceptional cases like provisional ballots or military ballots, which might not be countable for a week... those I wouldn't suggest waiting for. Announce the current totals when 'regular' counting is complete] 000
Jim Moskowitz @jimmosk.bsky.social · 24/03/2026I get that news sources love a horserace. I get completely caught up in watching election results come in, refreshing pages or staying glued to a news station in a way that must bring a tear to the eye of ad agencies. But I think it's deceptive, and harmful, to announce results in dribs and drabs. 101
Jim Moskowitz @jimmosk.bsky.social · 24/03/2026Nothing but chance (or differences in counter efficiency) is behind which precincts' counts were finished first. And of course the current system leads to accusations that later-announced votes which go the other way from earlier-announced ones might be the result of cheating. 100
Jim Moskowitz @jimmosk.bsky.social · 24/03/2026It makes people see vote-counting like a ball game, where one team can "have an early lead" or "come from behind" - both of which are only true when what's going to happen in the rest of the game... hasn't happened yet. But all the uncounted voters already *have* voted, and nothing can change them. 100
Jim Moskowitz @jimmosk.bsky.social · 24/03/2026The current system means that some precincts get announced first while there are others that haven't been counted, and those first precincts may not be at all representative of the other uncounted locations. 100
Jim Moskowitz @jimmosk.bsky.social · 24/03/2026A this-shouldn't-be-radical proposal, spurred by a post a friend of mine recently made: I don't think election results should be released piecemeal, over the course of an entire evening (or more). I think they should be held until the counting is completed. 100

If you live in the northeast US, you had a pretty cold winter, possibly one of the 25 coldest since these records began (1895). But if you're in the west, WOW was this a hot winter -- for many, the single hottest ever recorded. 120
