This weekend is the Pacific Airshow in Huntington Beach. Nearly all the jets fly anywhere from 100 to 200 feet directly above our house on their approach path out over the water. It's pretty incredible to see. My wife and I might take a walk downtown to check out the early morning happenings […]

After registering the jimmitchell.social domain name, expecting to use it for a Mastodon instance of my own, I’m suddenly procrastinating making a move. I’m not 100% sure it’s something I want to do. The first year for the domain is about $4, but renewal is going to be over $40. Is it worth it? […]

For the Micro.blog community, OutPost got a small update this morning: OutPost for Mac Update jimmitchell.org/2026/09/24/outpost-…

OutPost for Mac Update
I released a small update to OutPost for the Mac this morning that fixes the following: * ⌘W now closes the post you’re writing instead of the whole window. At the post list it closes the main window. * The Markdown preview shows your post at a more comfortable reading size, and follows View > Bigger Text and Smaller Text. * Block quotes in the Markdown preview no longer stretch taller than the quoted text. * The Delete Draft button now sits at the far end of the toolbar, away from the Post button when editing a draft. You can update to the latest by selecting “Check for Updates…” In the OutPost application menu, or download from the OutPost page.

OutPost for Mac Public Beta Available I'm pleased to announce that OutPost for Mac is publicly released today as a beta for adventurous users to try out. jimmitchell.org/2026/09/22/outpost-…
jimmitchell.org
OutPost for Mac Public Beta Available
I’m happy to share that the official public beta of OutPost for Mac is available. You can download the latest from: https://jimmitchell.dev/outpost ## What does OutPost do? OutPost is an Indieauth compliant Micropub editor for Mac (iOS/iPad coming soon) that will let you publish new and edit existing posts on your Micropub enabled blog. ## What platforms does OutPost work with? These platforms have been confirmed to work with OutPost to some degree. The mission, adventurous user, is for you to help me know what other platforms it works with and to what extent. If you know your website is Micropub enabled, give OutPost a try. **Platforms:** * Clodd CMS - the proprietary blog platform this site runs on, compatible with both Indieauth & Micropub. * Micro.blog - full compatibility with Indieauth & Micropub. * Pika.page - verified compatibility with Micropub. Some Pika editor features may not be completely compatible. Heavy testing from friends is needed here. * **Other editors?** You tell me if it works with your platform by emailing me at outpost@jimmitchell.dev. I’ll add it to the list. ## What version of macOS will OutPost work with? OutPost should work with macOS 15 (Sequoia) or later on both Intel and Apple Silicon. Let me know if it doesn’t. ## How do I report bugs? Send an email to outpost@jimmitchell.dev explaining the issue you encountered with as much detail as possible. Attach screenshots too. Lots of screenshots. A picture is literally worth a 1,000 when debugging software. ## Where’s the documentation? LOL. Silly user… There is no documentation; not yet anyway. I’d like to see if users find using the app intuitive to start with. If you get stuck, questions will be answered through outpost@jimmitchell.dev of course. ## Is OutPost free? It sure is, but I will gladly accept donations if you find it useful or simply want to support my Indieweb passion project. You can buy me a coffee to show some love. Remember; coffee fuels development. ## What else? **Big scary warning:** This is a public beta. There are inherent risks that come with trying software like this and bugs might exist. I’ve done my best to be sure they don’t, and the app works great on my devices. By downloading and using OutPost, you guarantee not to hold me accountable for any data loss whatsoever. Sorry, I have to say that. If this scares you, wait a while. Finally, keep in mind I’m a guy who has a _really_ demanding day job. Replies to email might take a day or two – maybe even three or more. Simple questions can be directed to me on Mastodon: @jimmitchell@indieweb.social. I usually reply pretty quickly there. Thanks for giving OutPost a go! Let me know what you think. _**Note:** This post was written with OutPost…_ 😎

Valley Seasons come, seasons go. I'm in a bit of a slump right now. What I need is to get away from the usual day to day and do something different on my own. jimmitchell.org/2026/09/18/valley
jimmitchell.org
Valley
I wrote a post back in January about falling into a creative slump, and that even when trying hard to climb out of it, I still felt like I was losing ground. I also said I found those times exhilarating and filled with potential. I, however, find myself in a different valley right now. I feel burned out, tired, and overwhelmed by work (mostly), personal obligations, and plain human nature. I’ve recently been let down by a few people I respected, and thought they felt the same. I was wrong. Like I said; human nature. I am not surprised, but I am disappointed. Also, I think I’ve burned a little too bright over the last six months with the different projects I’ve given myself. Sitting at the keyboard this morning, I just wanted to push it away. It almost felt like chains on my wrists as I was typing. I’ve not been getting enough exercise lately either. I’m sure this has a lot to do with how I’m feeling. I think what’s needed is a good outdoor solo reset, preferably on a hiking trail. I haven’t been able to do this in a few years since my heart troubles began. Throughout my life, I’ve taken occasional one or two-day mini-sabbaticals where I’d get out and “touch grass” in order to mentally reset. I can’t remember the last time I’ve been able to do that. So, I think it’s time to step away for a bit. I’ll still watching it all from the sidelines, but I’m going to be quiet for a spell.

micro.jimmitchell.org
I’ve not given **mnml** much love for a while and a handful of needed fixes have piled up. The latest version (v2.8.15) is now out, and here’s what’s corrected in this release… ### The Mobile Menu The mobile menu had a shift to it that always bugged me — open it, and the page behind would jump. Turns out the nav was getting pulled out of the page layout when the menu opened, which collapsed the header and yanked everything below it up. The page could also keep scrolling behind the open menu, so closing it would land you somewhere other than where you started. Both are sorted now, along with better keyboard and screen reader handling: focus stays in the menu while it’s open, and Escape closes it. ### Search Search results were being rendered in a way that would run any markup in a post title. If you use search on your site, this one’s worth updating for. ### Older and Newer Links Post navigation used to dead-end at New Year… Micro.blog stores posts in per-year folders, which Hugo treats as separate sections, so the last post of a year had no Newer link and the first post of the next had no Older. The chain runs straight through now. ### Accessibility and Translations * A skip-to-content link * A focus outline on the archive year filter * An accessible name on the back-to-top button * Smooth scrolling now respects reduced-motion preferences * Archive month headings are finally localized — they’d been showing English on every translated site. New strings added across all twelve languages. **And a small one:** a brand new blog with no posts yet no longer renders “© - 2026” in the footer. As always, you can upgrade through your plugins listing at your convenience. A full list of changes can be found here. Report any issues you run into by email. Enjoy!
