Red-headed Woodpecker Melanerpes erythrocephalus #Birds 🪶 The Red-headed Woodpecker is one of only four North American woodpeckers known to store food (insects and seeds. Grasshoppers are regularly stored alive), and it is the only one known to cover the stored food with wood or bark.

Northern House Wren Troglodytes aedon A Northern House Wren is a fierce competitor for nest holes. Wrens will sometimes drag eggs and young out of a nest site they want.—even occasionally killing adult birds. In my area they are the main source of nest failure for bluebirds. 🪶

Dark-eyed Junco Junco hyemalis #photography #birds I had a large fallout of Dark-eyed Juncos this week as they are leaving Ohio. Most are heading north to their breeding grounds in the coniferous forests of Canada. Their migration typically peaks here (Ohio) in March and April.

Tricolored Heron Egretta tricolor #photography #birds #wildlifephotography They tend to feed alone or at the edge of groups of other waders. The oldest recorded Tricolored Heron was at least 17 years, 8 months old when it was shot in the Bahamas in 1976. It had been banded in Virginia in 1958.
