as a classics prof currently reading the odyssey with my students, the sirens scene was my favorite in the movie. how do you properly soundtrack a song so good that no one hears it and survives (with one exception)? well, you mute the score and show odysseus’ self-inflicted psychological torture

that recognition is underscored in how he delivers the sirens episode. we “experience” the siren song through the eyes and ears of lieutenant eurylochus, deaf to the sirens with wax in our ears, watching his commander tied to the mast and screaming in agony to be let go

he also recognizes the homeric odyssey’s professional courtesy to the role of singers in the poem; they are, for lack of a better word, the creators of the poem, and the odyssey in books 1 and 8 foregrounds the role of singers. also, odysseus gives his own singer pardon in book 22 post-bloodbath

nolan smartly collapses and simplifies scenes from the source text and so makes what is originally an episodic behemoth into a linear story. easy move to shove the lotus eaters, calypso and the phaiakes into one stop (calypso feeding odysseus lotus but trying to jog his memory of troy and travels)

i saw nolan’s odyssey tonight, and it’s excellent. in addition to wilson’s translation, i wonder if he also worked through some secondary literature such as shay’s work on PTSD in homeric epic, because there’s a lot of that in the film
