Hi all, I'm Jim. My online friends know me as jimjimman. 😂 I have Spinal Muscular Atrophy. I'm trying to raise some money to pay for a backup manual wheelchair in case my motorized wheelchair breaks down. The state of Louisiana and Medicaid don't pay for backups, so I'm looking for a little help.

Here's the link. Thank you to any and all who contribute to my little fundraiser, even if that contribution is only a repost. It still helps a lot. ✌️ connect.vestwell.com/gifting/cala...

This has turned into a PSA, hasn't it? Anyway, the point is Able Accounts are awesome, I can't just spend the money on any ol' thing, and I would be incredibly grateful if you would contribute to mine. Note: CalAble has a minimum of $5 for gift contributions. Just click on Custom amount.

There is also an annual limit on how much you can put in ($20, 000 in 2026). Not all states offer them, but some that do allow any qualified persons to sign up no matter their state of residence. Louisiana has one for it's residents only, but I chose California's because they offer a debit card.

QDE stands for Qualified Disability Expense. Basically, anything related to maintaining the physical and mental health of the account holder. That could be medical equipment, accessibility tech (which includes computers), and even some (I emphasize some) social and travel expenses.

Normally, since I'm on Medicaid and SSI, I can't just go around asking for financial help. Thankfully, I have an Able Account. Able Accounts are savings accounts for eligible disabled individuals that don't affect eligibility for government assistance programs so long as the money is spent on QDEs.

I'm looking to buy a chair that can both tilt back (for pressure relief on my...lower half...don't laugh it's serious) and recline (muscle tension relief). Unfortunately, the few chair models that provide both are priced at around $2, 500 USD+ for the basic chair without add-ons (like extra pads).
