Hummingbirds take frequent rests during the day. They don't really sleep, but their heart rate slows down and they may close their eyes #photography #birds

The heart of the problem is that journalists quickly gave up on the idea of ever understanding what this software (and it is just software) actually does and how it works. That leaves them open to the hype put out by highly leveraged insiders.

It's absurd to even consider this question. A "trained" neural net is just cold, inert data. Any simulation of active agency comes from procedural code, doing exactly what it's written to do and nothing more.

#photography #naturephotography #macrophotograpy The American Lady butterfly is just 2 inches across. But get down to its visual scale, and its complex wing patterns could be cover art for a fantasy novel.

Once again it seems to me that people who haven't actually done software never really understand the distinction between code and data. And does that model even apply to the living brain? It's very hard to imagine how it would. Something very different is going on...

Bumblebee queen approaching Baptisia The large size of this bumblebee identifies her as a queen. Queens are the only ones that survive the winter. At this time of year they're out gathering food they'll use to start their new colonies. #photography #insectphotography #bees #pollinators

To people who've actually worked with computers and written software, it's totally clear that the brain is not a computer. A tractor can do some things that a horse can do - sometimes even faster. Is a horse therefore some sort of a tractor?

They watched the dinosaurs come... and go. And later, the mammoths and sabertooths. They're not impressed by us, yet. #photography #blackandwhitephotography

It's not a total abyss - I think people will gradually catch on. Seems like these days I most often see quotes around "brought back the dire wolf", so journalists are starting to engage with the PR instead of just running it.

Aaah you're making me feel bad. This is actually a focus stack of 50 images and the result of a lot of fiddling.

I guess if you're going to blast out with some totally unsubstantiated, wildly apocalyptic hype, with the goal of scaring people to death, you may as well preface it with "it is not an exaggeration to say..." and make a thorough job of it.

We're on the verge of admitting that no one has any idea what "general intelligence" is, much less how it could be created in software.

What many don't get about the "Turing Test" is that there's no time limit. Maybe an LLM can keep me guessing for 10 minutes with slightly vague, oddly formal responses and some canned jokes. But let me spend a week with it and I'm not going to mistake it for a conscious intelligence.
