I’ve been doing #inktober but have been neglecting to post my drawings here! So the following is a catch up on the last six days…

Hello. It looks like I’m doing #inktober again! The first prompt is #apple so I’ve drawn a diptych of @bobmort.bsky.social ripping an apple asunder.

A drawing of Bob Mortimer gripping an apple with both hands and attempting to pull it apart.

A drawing of Bob Mortimer smiling and holding up the torn halves of an apple.

A sketchbook open to show both previous drawings on opposite pages.

I’m picking up where I left off 3 months ago go with this Ink Portrait course. I’ve caught up with 1 of the 2 weeks left. Ink and brush and water is anathema to me as I like the control and precision of a biro butI think I’m getting it! #art #ink #brush #inkbrush #painting #drawing #sketchbook

I’ve been trying to get to grips with brush pen and water brush this week. I don’t really like ink brush as yet and I am missing my beloved crosshatching, but I can see if I stick with it, that brush pen has a lot of potential. #art #sketchbook #brushpen #inkbrush #waterbrush

A bit of an experiment this morning: I did this 10-minute drawing using black ballpoint pen then I though, “What if I added the wallpaper background in green and the lady’s pink dress in red?” Well… it’s alright. A bit busy. I think I prefer it without! #art #drawing #sketchbook #ballpointpenart

A drawing of a lady using black ballpoint pen hatching with green wallpaper in the background and a pink dress.

The same drawing of a lady using black ballpoint pen hatching but without the additional colours. It looks a lot cleaner and simpler.

I’m doing this cool ink portrait course with dylan sara & am enjoying really simplifying my drawings. It’s a big change after doing cross-hatching for the last few months. Here’s 3 sketches of the same reference photo I’ve done this week. #sketchbook #art #linedrawing #fineliner (& biro) #portrait

A rather elongated Willem Dafoe. I started with my posh fountain pen and instantly smudged the initial lines. So I switched to a nice cheap biro. I rather liked it! I think I’ll do more biro drawings soon. #art #sketchbook #biro #willemdafoe #YouKnowImSomethingOfADrawingMyself

Two more pictures that I drew with Dylan Sara’s Advent draw-alongs. I’m rather enjoying this method of putting down a layer of pencil which works a bit like using coloured paper. #art #sketchbook #pencildrawing #portraits

I was completely burnt out after #inktober and haven’t drawn anything since. That’s a month and a week without drawing. I was starting to get “The Fear” about putting pen to paper again. What if it was terrible? What if I’d forgotten how to draw? 1/3 #art #pencil #pencildrawing #sketchbook #neo

#inktober Day 30, “vacant”. The penultimate drawing! I was frustrated that I didn’t get a better likeness of John Lyndon as he’s so distinctive. #inktober day 15, “ragged”. Sometimes, I get to the reference photo that I chose before the month started, & I just don’t want to draw it. For example, for “ragged” I’d found a homeless person playing guitar, but I found it a bit depressing, & I didn’t want to do a figure, I wanted to do a face. 1/?

#inktober day 14, “trunk”. I’m much happier with this one. Back to my usual pen and I did the grey first to avoid smudging. I didn’t really have to do much crosshatching. I just had to follow the elephants’ wrinkles! #art #penandink #fountainpen #elephant #elephants #sketchbook #drawing

#inktober day 12, “shredded”. This is the first time I’ve not used a reference photo from Pinterest. The idea came from there but the examples were too complex or too ugly. So I made my own collage. It’s still a bit freaky, but there you go. #shredded #art #sketchbook #fountainpen #crosshatching

James C Holland @jimholland.bsky.social · 12/10/2025

It’s a double whammy of #inktober pictures from me today as I try to catch up a bit. Day 9, “Heavy”. I went for heavy metal & thus James Hetfield from Metallica. The reference photo cut him off at the ankles so I had to find a photo with him in a similar stance & transplant his feet from there!

James C Holland @jimholland.bsky.social · 11/10/2025

#Inktober day 8, “Reckless”. I’m very pleased with this one. It’s Jason Lee, of My Name Is Earl, skateboarding. The reference picture had this cool slight fisheye lens effect. #art #drawing #sketchbook #ink #fountainpen #crosshatching #jasonlee @inktober @inktober_2025 @sketchbookskool

Inktober day 7, “Starfish”. Sorry to this random lady off Pinterest. I did a bad flat layer of hatching, added a worse scrappy layer & finally a third layer that might have salvaged it. I like the water and sky effects though. #art #sketchbook #pen #ink #crosshatching #starfish

#inktober day six, prompt: “Pierce.” Mainly to make my other half happy, I have drawn her favourite moment in cinematic history, which is when hairy Pierce Brosnan climbs out of the sea and walks into a hotel at the start of “Die Another Day”. #art #sketchbook #ink #pen #jamesbond #piercebrosnan
