Wow, is this Dustin Hoffman's greatest on-screen performance? They sure knew how to make gritty films in the 1970s. Directed by Ulu Grosbard and featuring stellar performances by Hoffman, Theresa Russell, Gary Busey, and Harry Dean Stanton. This film is cinematic dynamite.

So good. I've seen this a couple of times, but this was my first 4k viewing. Beautifully filmed and definitely bloody. Another first rate job by Severin and the replica barf bag was a nice touch.

A movie that dares to ask "What if Airplane took place on a train full of drag queens?" Wacky good fun.

I don't go to the theater to see first run films very often, but I'm glad I went to see this on the big screen. A colorful, funny, crazy, absurdly eccentric sci-fi film that doesn't take itself too seriously, this small budget indie punches well above it's weight class. Oakland is in the house!

Intense 1989 drama directed by Euzhan Palcy starring Donald Sutherland. An unflinching look at state sponsored violence in apartheid era South Africa. Sutherland is fantastic as is the entire cast including Marlon Brando in a supporting role as a fearless civil rights lawyer. Highly recommended.

1998 Biopic about Muhammad Ali Jinnah, founder of Pakistan. Christopher Lee has said this is his best and most important work. Good movie, I had little knowledge of the events surrounding the creation of India & Pakistan after 200 years of British rule. Lee gives a world class performance.

Another nifty Jess Franco release from Mondo Macabro. Heavy on atmosphere and deeply psychological. Emma Cohen is simply stunning as a detached jazz pianist traumatized by her father’s death. A character study in existential ennui in sharp contrast to the party lifestyle of 1970s Spain.

New Rose Hotel (1998). Great cast, decent plot, nice soundtrack. The movie is moving along nicely, and then suddenly at the 2/3 point, it ends abruptly. Then it spends the remaining 1/3 regurgitating on itself through pointless flashbacks that add up to nothing. What am I missing here?

So happy to get my grubby little hands on this awesome blu ray of The Who's Quadrophenia from Super Deluxe Edition. I've owned every edition of this in every conceivable format since 1975 and this is BY FAR the best it has ever sounded. Thanks SDE!

Another amazing and unique gem from Mondo Macabro. This 1992 Latvian "erotic horror" film is beautifully shot with many scenes that feel like paintings come to life. Much of the film feels like a surreal dream and the practical effects are stunning.

Well it's about time I got around to viewing this 1989 film directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky. Much to chew on, this film is by turns atmospheric, disturbing, surreal, violent, and magical. It certainly merits repeated viewings. Thanks to Severin for giving this film the deluxe treatment it deserves.

It's about time I have gotten around to seeing this. Mario Bava directs this beautiful big budget psychedelic crime thriller. A fun film from 1968. The Ennio Morricone soundtrack alone is worth the price of admission!

This delightful low budget horror-comedy from 1964 hits it out of the park. Written & directed by Jack Hill and starring Lon Chaney in a comedic role! The whole cast is dynamite. Sid Haig is great and Jill Banner is simply mesmerizing. Great fun!

The Laughing Woman Dir by Piero Schivazappa, this 1969 Italian film features beautiful pop-art sets and groovy psychedelic soundtrack. Maria, a journalist, is kidnapped by Dr. Sayer who subjects her to S&M games. She must use all her skills to survive. Can she escape? Intense, but not torture porn.

A nice slice of the David Lynch pie. This is the 4th or 5th time I’ve watched this wonderful film, and for the first time it actually seemed to make sense to me. The mystery is the message.

1988 big budget EuroSleaze. Jess Franco on his best behavior. It felt like a 1980s American made for TV movie of the week. Enjoyable enough, but overall very tame. I prefer Franco’s more outrageous stuff. The Severin 4K is gorgeous.

OK, they can't all be winners. I've read that while Jean Rollin was making Iron Rose, he realized it would probably be a financial failure, so he agreed to make this cheap exploitation film for some quick cash. A few cheesy sex scenes wrapped around a thin plot and uninspired acting. Best to avoid.

Amazing. This Jean Rollin film is big on atmosphere and texture. Françoise Pascal is absolutely mesmerizing. Slow building goth terror at its finest.

Sometimes you stumble across a film that defies classification. "The Savage Eye" is a jarring assemblage of footage highlighting the seedy underbelly of 1950s America held together by the dark narrative of a recently divorced and discarded woman. The brutal modernist jazz score is amazing.

Did someone say action? Loved this, my new favorite Jackie Chan film. Although I have yet to see Project A, that is next on my list.

Revisiting a classic. This time I was not overwhelmed by the violence, instead I was blown away by the subtleties and finer points of the performances, especially that of Tommy Lee Jones. My older self can relate to his wise philosophical angst. The Coen brothers create magic with this one.
