I understand that funding bodies want to go all in on AI as the shiny new innovation thing. But if all the grants start going to AI at the expense of everything else then the research sector is going to end up looking like a farm with dozens of threshers hacking away in a field with no wheat.

One of Australia's biggest banks is worried about the rising costs of AI in return for basically no productivity improvements "You can use AI to create an enormous amount of volume, noise and waste" Pretty sure @edzitron.com predicted this...... www.afr.com/technology/b...
Big business rush to embrace AI runs into worries of rising costs
The news | The country’s biggest companies are increasingly shifting their approach to artificial intelligence, worrying that a push to adopt automated tools as quickly as possible is sending costs soaring without real productivity gains.

What they said | Commonwealth Bank chief executive Matt Comyn said the country’s largest lender was increasingly viewing AI as a “scarce resource” and use of the technology was conversely making human judgment more valuable.

“You can use AI to create an enormous amount of volume, noise and waste – and knowing the difference is a really important skill and capability,” Comyn told The Australian Financial Review AI Summit in Sydney today.“You can use AI to create an enormous amount of volume, noise and waste – and knowing the difference is a really important skill and capability,” Comyn told The Australian Financial Review AI Summit in Sydney on Tuesday.

“In the early days, you want people to start using the tools – and they didn’t really cost a lot ... now the way the models work, the amount of context that you can put into it, your costs do not scale on a linear basis.”

Around the world, companies that rushed to use AI tools – and benefit by reducing employee expenses and increasing productivity – are now focused on their costs. The basic unit for those costs is tokens, measuring how much data is processed through models such as Anthropic’s Claude.

Costs vary depending on the model: Claude’s Opus model, for instance, charges $US5 ($6.97) per million input tokens – that is, questions asked – and $US25 per million tokens for answers given by the tool. So far, the rule has been that 1000 tokens equals roughly 750 words.

With companies rolling out tools across tens of thousands of employees, spending can rise quickly and consumption differs greatly depending on tasks. A worker running complex document analysis could consume 500,000 tokens a day, according to MindStudio, a platform for building AI agents, while a casual user asking three questions might use only 3000.

Coles chief executive Leah Weckert said that although the supermarket giant had yet to face a surge in costs, it was clear that the expense of AI processes compared with its productivity returns was “an emerging issue”.
