Now that I finished all of my field work and writing I can share my main thesis. The paper analyzes what it means to be a "good" player and what success means in the FGC. I analyze multiple different levels of success: one is "gap", which is how people view fairness and skill within the game.

every fighting game player learns early on that the character you play matters very little and that skill is what gets you results, up to a certain level. it is your duty to forget this after 3 months and say "[player] is placing highly, the character must be good" for the rest of your career.
