jr @jhn.lol · 26/03/2026you can configure apps to open in specific workspaces which helps a lot. it works on multi-monitor setups too. there is a copypaste example at the end of the linked section nikitabobko.github.io/AeroSpace/gu...nikitabobko.github.ioAeroSpace Guide 010
jr @jhn.lol · 17/02/2026that’s great! i kind of get your position and the current open source climate. also it’s not like we, as in outsider, can make any demands for the source code whatsoever. 000
jr @jhn.lol · 17/02/2026this is starting to get into too good zone. please tell us there is at least something that’s frustrating in chatto 😸 100
jr @jhn.lol · 05/02/2026this is sad. there is good software and genuine developers out there building alternatives to software we all use but rather self host and tweak for our own use. and then we judge those who make them. i would much rather live in a world where those alternatives exist, chatto included. 010
jr @jhn.lol · 14/01/2026scripting support has finally arrived to react native. also the api has improved a lot compared to legacy version in every aspect. 010

jr @jhn.lol · 20/12/2025for persistent state i’ve been very happy with @xstate/store and my own migration and persistence layers on top of it. for app/component state it’s just what react has built in: useState, useReducer and useContext to avoid prop drilling. for server state it’s react query. 040
jr @jhn.lol · 11/12/2025yes. it was quite simple 2d game long time ago. we used lottie for many animations but today i’d use rive for almost everything if i need to build a similar game. if you need physics maybe checkout godot. you can integrate it as a view into your rn app. 030

jr @jhn.lol · 30/10/2025@expo.dev config plugins are nice for simple things but working with custom targets is painful. lots of custom code to replicate what’s one click in in xcode ui. @bacon.bsky.social’s rewrite of xcode npm module looks nice and i wish it’d come with expo. ts support, better output and many bug fixes. 100
Reposted by jrjr @jhn.lol · 27/10/2025what comes to accessibility labels and having a good screen reader support i can say that just learning to use it is the best tool you can teach yourself. ios has a good 15 minute voiceover tutorial built in to learn gestures and all that stuff. if you're stuck just use siri to turn it off. 001

jr @jhn.lol · 23/10/2025yes! no more interpolateColor to animate background color or other color properties. makes everything so much cleaner too. f.e. pairs well with unistyles. 000

jr @jhn.lol · 02/10/2025@leaflet.pub a minor bug report: scroll to top gesture on ios doesn’t work on your site. the gesture is this little tap on the top edge of the device and it’s built in to the os. 140
jr @jhn.lol · 23/07/2025i use cloudflare (sadly it only allows their own nameservers) and aws route 53. i'm happy with both atm. 000
jr @jhn.lol · 23/07/2025i like this sort of domain based file structure a lot. what i dont like is the amount of folders. what i've found is that folders tend to hide files. so i avoid them. also when i abandoned DRY almost completely, my code became so much more maintainable and much of friction just vanished. 020
jr @jhn.lol · 17/06/2025fzf is awesome! it makes my little scripts so much more usable and portable. first time i made something with fzf is this little git worktree helper i’ve been using daily for close to two years. github.com/jozan/gw-hel...github.comGitHub - jozan/gw-helper: use git worktree with easeuse git worktree with ease. jr @jhn.lol · 11/04/2025i’ve been using nightly builds for two years and i haven’t stumbled onto a broken/buggy build yet. plugins i use keep up with the nightly builds. i upgrade to new nightly when there is a feature or a fix i want which is about every few months. 110
jr @jhn.lol · 06/04/2025shortly put: it was for kids. collect points moving around irl (with basic movement tracker), sync tracker data using BLE to app and convert them to points, use points to move in the game. kids had trackers and parents had phones. it was a fun project but the game is long gone. i learned a lot. 010
jr @jhn.lol · 04/04/2025back in 2015 right after react native was released i used it to prototype an ipad app. it was my very first react app! less than two years later i was working full time on a game where we used react native to render everything. i did a few rn apps and in between but nothing too serious. 110
jr @jhn.lol · 02/04/2025it's not as painful as it was just a few years ago. we developers could do more, and probably should, but we also like to ship to three platforms from one codebase. 😅 to slim js bundle size i've been using expo atlas. github.com/expo/atlas/github.comGitHub - expo/atlas: Visualize React Native bundles to understand and optimize your app.Visualize React Native bundles to understand and optimize your app. - expo/atlas 130
jr @jhn.lol · 01/04/2025this is nothing new but surprises a lot of people who are new to native development. android studio is more stable in this regard but it prompts users to upgrade gradle etc which is also bad. maybe react native community cli and expo could detect this and guide users to fix their xcode installs. 100
jr @jhn.lol · 01/04/2025this shouldn’t happen suddenly and you can prevent it. stop using mac app store and download xcode manually from developer.apple.com. you can have multiple xcode installs at the same time which is handy. all this is described on gh by @brandtnewlabs.com take control of you dev env. 110
jr @jhn.lol · 01/04/2025i used siri to control my alarms before i started using shortcuts and automating them. i’m using alarms throughout the day for many things and shortcuts allow me to separate morning alarms from the rest. i can tell siri to “turn off all alarms” and i still wake up tomorrow on time. 010
jr @jhn.lol · 01/04/2025i’ve decided that this ui is unusable. so i made couple shortcuts and now i have alarms off/on widgets that i can press. turning alarms on is automated in shortcuts app. if i need another alarm i use siri to completely avoid the ui. created them on mac and finished setup on phone. 131
jr @jhn.lol · 26/03/2025i didn't believe wes so i used tanstack query for years instead. turns out he was right after all. 020
jr @jhn.lol · 26/03/2025i've used for rn community cli to pass simulator name `yarn react/native ios --simulator "iPhone 16 Pro"`. there is also --device flag. same works for expo cli but all is done with --device flag. 100
jr @jhn.lol · 26/03/2025this is somewhat frustrating. i've found that if it does find a physical device it takes priority. sims are second class citizens apparently. the device doesn't need to be connected physically via cable or even in the same wifi. xcode seems to find the device if it's connected to the internet. 😅 100
jr @jhn.lol · 21/03/2025excuse me but what’s the app on the right of simulator you use to toggle dark mode? looks useful. 100
jr @jhn.lol · 11/03/2025i guess instead preparing a meeting with your boss and getting them on board with expo and CNG spend a few hours by trying to go as far as you can go. the more you have react native upgrade experience the smoother the upgrade. 010
jr @jhn.lol · 11/03/2025in the past i’ve defeated cocoapods by committing whole Pods dir into repo. local and ci pod installs got really fast. also my colleagues never liked it. 乁( ◔ ౪◔)ㄏ 000
jr @jhn.lol · 11/03/2025i think this graph is not correct. we recently migrated from bare react native to expo and it was much smaller initial investment than the graph here conveys. 😸 depends on project ofc but just getting CNG to work is not a lot of work. surprisingly to me it felt more like a normal RN upgrade. 210
jr @jhn.lol · 07/03/2025this is one of the concerns i have with react native testing as of now. swapping runtime for tests is not simple, as jest only supports nodejs afaik. there is github.com/ExodusMoveme... and it supports running unit tests on hermes but it has its own implementation of jest.github.comGitHub - ExodusMovement/test: A runner for node:test, jest, and tape test suites on top of node:test (and any runtime)A runner for node:test, jest, and tape test suites on top of node:test (and any runtime) - ExodusMovement/test 000
