Strategic marketing for serious business owners. Four decades of separating signal from noise. If it's not strategic, it's not marketing.

Your customers don't buy features. They buy outcomes. The feature is proof. The benefit is the reason someone buys. Flip that order and your marketing starts attracting the right people.

You approved the campaign. It looked impressive. Three months later: disappointing results. Beautiful creative on a shaky strategy doesn't buy customers.

I’m going to share what’s probably the most important marketing acronym you haven’t heard of: TTT - Talk to Them. If you want to break through, talk to your customers; talk to them about what’s important to them. Listen to how they describe their situation. Use their words in your marketing.

I discovered something yesterday that you should know. We have a Claude plugin that contains the skills we developed for the marketing work we do for our clients.

"Why charge an hour for a 5-minute fix?" Because nothing takes 5 minutes. You aren't just paying for time; you're paying for admin, software fees, and years of expertise that make quick fixes possible. Don't sell your experience short.

I graduated with a music degree and spent 6 yrs in Rock & Roll before getting my 1st job at an ad agency. Surprising? Being a performing musician was actually solid preparation. Both require linear and lateral thinking. And music without dissonance is boring. Marketing without dissonance is…

Personal brands are the epitome of inside-out marketing. Nobody cares about your brand. They care about solutions to their problems.

Your LinkedIn, Instagram, and newsletter aren't three separate strategies. They're one strategy showing up in three places. Connected or scattered. There's no third option.

Most social content is written from the inside out. What do we want to say? What fits the calendar? Start outside-in instead. What is your reader stuck on today?

James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
Post consistently is good advice. It says nothing about what you're delivering. The discipline of showing up is real. The strategy still has to be there too.

Customers referred by your best clients aren't just cheaper to acquire. They tend to have 2x the lifetime value of other acquisitions. One investment. Two returns.

James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
Your best customers require fewer support hours, refer better prospects, and buy more over time. They're also the ones you're barely marketing to.

Most businesses spend the majority of their marketing budget chasing the 80% who generate 20% of the value. The 20% worth keeping is already yours.

When your marketing connects every P, 1+1+1+1+1+1+1 doesn't equal 7. It multiplies. That's the difference between a checklist and a system.

James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
Your pricing communicates something before prospects ever talk to you. If it doesn't match your positioning, they pick up a mixed signal. That's not a pricing problem. It's a connection problem.

From a deck I just sent a client about his sales calls: It's a commercial relationship. A friend who asks for money is violating the frame. A professional who asks for money is honoring it. You've earned the right to ask.
000
James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 10/08/2026
You've got the product, the website, the social accounts, the newsletter. If none of it is connected, none of it is multiplying. Marketing works as a system or it doesn't really work.

Most business owners write Problem + Solution and wonder why their copy doesn't move anyone. Agitation is the missing piece. That's where urgency lives.

James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
Read your About page out loud. Count the times it talks about you vs. your customer. If you're winning that count, you sound like the hero. Your customer came looking for a sherpa.

James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
"We're an award-winning firm serving the region." About you. "When your systems crash, your business stops." About them. Same company. One earns attention, one demands it.

James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
Most business owners use engagement data to decide what to post next. Likes tell you what people enjoyed. Not where they are in their journey. Your analytics aren't a scorecard. They're a map.
000
James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
Good content that isn't landing. Often it's not the topic, it's the format. Short and specific earns attention at the awareness stage. A 3,000-word guide demands it. They're not the same audience.
000
James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 27/07/2026
The metrics can look great and still mean nothing. People at the top of the funnel don't know they have a problem yet. You can't sell to someone who's still just browsing. Give them something useful before the ask.

James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
You can't earn trust in six seconds. But you can earn the next 30. A star rating, a real quote, contact info that's easy to find. They don't close the sale. They buy you the time to make your case.
000
James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Your hero section needs to answer three questions fast: Am I in the right place? Can you solve my problem? Why should I trust you? Most answer none of them.
000
James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 20/07/2026
Six seconds. That's how long a visitor decides whether to stay on your site or leave. Most sites fail the test in three spots: slow load, a hero that says nothing, no clear next step.

James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
Showing your thinking builds more trust than selling. Educational content generates 3x more leads than ads. And every piece builds the case that you know what you're doing.
000
James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
Most case studies are written from the company's perspective. The ones that convert are written from the customer's. Before. Cost. After. That sequence does the work.
000
James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 13/07/2026
Most marketing has two modes: get attention, close the deal. The trust decision happens in between. That's where most businesses go quiet. Mid-funnel is where the relationship is built.
000
James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 10/07/2026
Most businesses start from zero every time they create content. One recorded conversation can become an e-book, blog posts, a podcast, a presentation. Think once. Publish often.
000
James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 08/07/2026
"Subscribe to our newsletter" gets you a list. Giving away something people genuinely want gets you an audience who trusts you before you've sold them anything. That's a different starting point.
000
James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
You don't have to write an e-book to publish one. Most never do. That expertise just sits there, helping no one. Talk, record, transcribe. Under $750.

Every click on your site is your customer telling you who they are. You're calling it a CTA. I'd call it a data point. Stop guessing. They've already told you.

James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 01/07/2026
90% of loyalty problems trace back to a flawed sales process. Not bad products. Not bad service. The process. The first sale you can get. The second one is the real test.
000
James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 29/06/2026
The phrase "call to action" puts your goal first, not the customer's. Replace it with pathways. Steps that match where they are in the journey. Pushing feels like pressure. Guiding builds trust.

James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 29/06/2026
Posting consistently isn't a strategy. It's a delivery schedule. A mail carrier who shows up at noon every day is impressively consistent. If the mailbox is empty, you stop coming to the door. Decide what's in the box first.

Inside-out messaging. Disconnected channels. Scattered effort. When we flipped it: sales up 280%, email open rates doubled, conversions tripled. The product didn't change. The intention behind the marketing did.

Years ago, I had a 3-year assignment in Venezuela. My memories of it are mixed. The positives are almost all connected to the joyous people I met. Venezuela has experienced an unspeakable tragedy, and I’d ask you to do what you can to support its recovery.

Marketing like a wheel: website is the hub, channels are the spokes, messaging is the rim. No rim? You don't have a wheel. You have spokes spinning independently, going nowhere. Most businesses are missing the rim.
000
James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 22/06/2026
Busy marketing calendar. Plenty of activity. Nothing moving. The problem isn't effort. It's connection. When your channels don't reinforce each other, they compete for attention instead of building momentum. That's the thing Zen Marketing fixes.

LinkedIn driving 70% of qualified traffic. Instagram driving bounces. Email driving opens, no conversions. You can only see that with UTM codes. Without them, you're guessing — and you might be growing the wrong channel.
000
James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 17/06/2026
Without UTM codes, your analytics say "social media." With them, they say "the LinkedIn post from March 15th about that topic." That distinction changes every marketing decision you make.
000
James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
A client was ready to quit his best-performing channel. Without tracking, he would have killed LinkedIn and doubled down on a channel driving nothing. UTM codes are the difference between guessing and knowing.

Neither format was wrong. Long-form and short-form content do different work at different stages of the buyer's journey. Stop asking "long or short?" Start asking "where is this buyer right now?" The length takes care of itself.
010
James @jhipkin.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
Your buyer has three stages. Each needs different content. Awareness: short-form pulls them in, long-form earns the visit. Consideration: depth builds trust. Decision: get out of their way. One approach applied everywhere is why content "isn't working."

"Build an audience" is the most expensive bad advice in marketing. An audience follows you like they follow the weather. Mild curiosity, zero commitment. Stop building an audience. Sell something to someone.
