medium.com/@grethermurr... It's all AI, the differences are all in application. The math (bayesian inference, vectors, and matrices) is all the same and has been since the first AI programs in 1950s. The only thing that has really changed is the scale.

The math behind A.I: From Machine Learning to Deep Learning

"How much is too much?" $1 is too much if it's given or accepted with corrupt intent. It's not about the amount it's about corruption. Larger amounts just make it harder for candidates to resist the corrupting influence, or compete with those who have been corrupted.

WTF?

I am in the camp that few, if any, tech is evil in and of itself. AI has done amazing things over the last few decades and it promises to do much more. Sadly the people best positioned to achieve those positive outcomes are greedy assholes who are more concerned with the money than the good.

Again, your beef is not with the technology itself. You're equating the tech with the mess around it. It's like being against nuclear fission without acknowledging that while power generation and bombs are the same tech, the choices made about its application are VASTLY different.

A fair analogy. Though we didn't know the harms of asbestos from the beginning. With AI they market it by highlighting how it will kill us. I don't think there are any good analogs for AI. The closest I can come is the internet, though it didn't have the same fear element, it had the hype.

What makes you think I'm encouraging it. I recognize the value of the tech. But I don't think it needs to be as ubiquitous as it is. We don't need AI in everything everywhere. AI has the potential to do great things, but 80% of the current applications are just a waste of the resources.

Agreed. If they placed them where it made sense. Powered them with renewables. Etc. would we even be having these conversations? These are all decisions made by people choosing to go fast and break things for greed.

Well, there were thousands of datacenters before this big AI push. And there is no requirement to deploy so much AI so fast. The tech will only get faster and cooler... they don't need to rush. And there are places where the impacts would be less, though at greater cost. It's all about choices

jhfry.bsky.social @jhfry.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
The way they are building them, of course not. But being a horrible neighbor is a choice being made by people, not a requirement of the technology.

Machines doing stupid amounts of math get faster and more efficient (in terms of amount of math per watt) at an exponential rate. If the people, who are the problem, would just slow their roll, we may never need all of these massive data centers. And we might have time to do it safely.

I am not saying that things are bleak. But it's not the tech that's bad, but the people around it. The people who resist regulation, the people who ignore the environmental and social costs. It's not AI, but AI bros.

You say by typing on a phone connected by a wireless network with a global fiber optic backbone moving more data per second than existed when you were born. Of course we don't NEED any of our tech. Like AI much of it has been branded as bad along the way, sometimes with good reason.

It will continue to do amazing things, if we don't get distracted by all of the generative AI BS.

It's already doing amazing things, and has been for decades. We called it machine learning, or predictive modeling... But the underlying process is identical. Everything from modeling the weather to discovering new medicines, to designing antennas for cellphones has been done using "AI".

jhfry.bsky.social @jhfry.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
That's the cost of being pragmatic. The technology is not evil or anything, it's the way it's being implemented that's evil. AI will do amazing things for the betterment of humanity, we just can't let it destroy us first. At some point we will have a trillions worth of obsolete hardware, and ...

Until we can come up with a way for everyone to get along, it seems that requiring more responsible gun ownership might be a sensible thing to do. Will it prevent every incident like this? Of course not. But how many could it prevent? Would it be worth it if it's your 14yo daughter who is saved?

Yeah... And? What's your point? I was simply saying that we shouldn't celebrate that areas of our country are dying faster... it's not just the ignorant that are dying at a higher rate, but those surrounded by them (like myself in TN) that suffer.

My beef is that when you are at war with someone it's because you disagree about something. Therefore their journalists WILL have a different perspective and will write things you don't like. Basically they are saying journalists are valid targets, pretty sure that the world decided otherwise.

Most deeply red counties have a significant percentage of their population that votes blue or doesn't participate, they don't deserve to suffer due to the poor politics of the majority in their area... especially the kids. We should be championing better outcomes for EVERYONE, not celebrating death

Feel like SpaceX is being short sighted here. Maintaining a second launch vehicle that is established and profitable is a great way to remain diverse. It also provides a backup revenue stream, and a platform to innovate upon. Spin it off as a new subsidiary and make it self sufficient.

Ummm ACA plans are almost all high deductible... so you have to pay out of pocket for everything initially. I bet he is looking at the number of people who the ACA hasn't paid a claim for... which is not the same as not using it.. they just don't meet the deductible so are paying out of pocket.

Single payer would completely change the dynamic. Workers could afford to change jobs or start their own thing. Spend a half year traveling or caring for an ailing parent. Tying health care to a job does nothing for the worker. Decoupling would likely increase pay more than taxes.

"Every month we come to the table and we have a discussion. Is it time to close a business? Is it time to seek employment somewhere in the hopes of gaining health insurance?" This is the point. They want everyone employed by billionaires, not independent.

I don't think it's hard to argue at all. AI is not producing extra knowledge, at best it's distilling what we already have. At worse it's removing incentives for funding real research that creates new knowledge. AI cannot perform experiments, gather data, etc.

They asking voters to compare the status quo with the most extreme example of a candidate diametrically opposed to status quo. There is obviously a gradient between these two extremes. If they had included middle ground it would have failed to illustrate just how bad this is for Republicans.

They know they are losing power in a couple months and are going to try and achieve the rest of Putin's objectives before they do, in hope they retain enough power that the Dems can't undo anything over the next two years.
