My analogy for linear probing was oversold airlines where two people get the same seat assignment, and the stewardess adjudicates by moving the 2nd person to the next open seat. That seemed to resonate.

I think there's also a hand-over-hand approach to the transfer that makes it easy for one drop of the ball to cascade. Too, sometimes there's a mix of things that you want to preserve and things you don't want to make semi public record wholesale. That adds difficulty.
