This weather also affected our La Silla observing site, leading to the temporary suspension of scientific operations. As weather conditions are now finally improving, operations are slowly returning to normal at all sites.

Over the past days, unusually severe weather has affected northern Chile, where our observatories are located. This brought snow to Paranal and to the ELT construction site. It left stunning images, while causing severe flooding and damage to several cities within the Antofagasta Region. 🔭 1/2

When utilized in literature review, LLMs consistently 1. fail to mention female authors in female-led literatures, 2. insist that men are more influential or more heavily cited when this is contradicted by objective citation counts, and 3. attribute women’s work to hallucinated male scholars.

So in 2026, during a global climate crisis and fuel shortages, Finnair decides to reinstate flights between Turku and Helsinki, about 170 km apart. According to the city of Turku, it's a strong sign of Turku's attractiveness. Make it make sense 🤦‍♀️

An image of a spiral galaxy, showing only the light from specific gasses within, looking like much of the galaxy has been replaced with empty space and only an outline remains. This outline is composed of specks of different coloured light, with a cone of white-ish light at the centre. “A short stroll...” says the writer aleaving the house. The sun has begun to peek over the horizon.

Panel 2.
“Then back to my desk for a good day's writing in the winter sun.” The sun has risen a little higher.

Panel 3.
“Surely it's not going down yet?” The sun is indeed on its way down.

Panel 4.
“Perhaps I'll catch the last rays.” Says the writer breaking into a sprint.

My cartoon for this week’s @newscientist.com
A comic strip in six panels. The panels inerlock like a jigsaw with knobs and sockets. Two stick figures walk right to left through all the panels.

Panel 1: Person 1 says "I hear you're working on a new theory."
Panel 2 & 3: Person 2 says: "Yes, I'm calling it the jigsaw model. I think it could change our whole View of reality."
Panel 4: Person 1 says "When Will you publish?:
Panel 5: Person 2 says "But a couple of things are still bothering me." (this piece/panel is a bit squint)
Panel 6: This piece is rotated ninety degees and fits to the others very badly. Person 2 is saying "Soon. I feel like I'm really close"
A second look at the whole comic shows that the last two panels read in the wrong order because the jigsaw has been put together incorrectly.
