I haven't actually tried it, but I've heard from some European colleagues that they really like anytype. I keep thinking of trying it but hard to test mid semester..

It's bad and definitely will increase risk and harm for folks. AND you can get advances from casinos sometimes too (called a marker), so this is sadly not new for the gambling industry

I think it's also notable that comparing to the tobacco industry is very much something many gamblers I've spoken to in our recent qualitative interviews have done when discussing advertising.

1/43 Ok folks, after much teasing and anticipation, I'm THRILLED to share our new paper in Annual Review of Clinical Psychology. Not gonna lie: I'm proud of this one, and I hope it makes an impact on the field (so please share!). A thread 🧵👇
To Be a Mental Disorder: Revisiting Behavioral Addictions
Joshua B. Grubbs, * Nicholas C. Borgogna, Beáta Bőthe, Hyoun S. Kim, Rory A. Pfund, Shane W. Kraus

Manuscript to appear in the 2027 edition of Annual Review of Clinical Psychology, this preprint may not
exactly represent the final printed copy.

Grubbs, J.B., Borgogna, N.C., Bőthe, Beáta, Kim, H.S., Pfund, R.A., & Kraus, S.W. (2027) To Be a Mental Disorder: Revisiting Behavioral Addictions. Annual Review of Clinical Psychology. 10.1146/annurev-clinpsy-061225-045608

Behavioral addictions have been recognized in various forms for centuries, yet only three—Gambling Disorder, Gaming Disorder, and Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder—are currently included in formal diagnostic systems. In the past decade, research on these conditions has expanded dramatically in both volume and methodological rigor, drawing on longitudinal, neurobiological, and cross-cultural designs and evolving into a truly global science. Even so, the field remains beset by unresolved controversies. Chief among these is a persistent tendency to import substance use disorder concepts—tolerance, withdrawal, and dependence—that lack conceptual and empirical support when applied to behavior. Related challenges concern the over-pathologizing of normal engagement and a reliance on confirmatory, self-report measurement of uncertain validity. We argue that advancing the field requires sustained funding, theory grounded in the disorders themselves, objective and intensive-longitudinal methods, greater diversity, and public health and regulatory attention to increasingly technological environments.

While faith based organizations should be included in the continuum of care, they should use evidence based care (and some do!). However, prior work suggests that religiosity can bias our decisions about addiction treatment, which may not always be in the best interest of all clients.

The clear and mostly ignored (within the US) influence of gambling industry members (yes Kalshi!) on gambling harm prevention and advocacy in the US is a disservice to all gamblers and communities impacted by gambling. Their collaboration is needed to prevent harm but not like this.

By calling distress about social media an addiction, we are also unintentionally invoking negative biases about addiction ("lazy", "their own fault") that allows companies to be less responsible. So unless we are certain the case is addiction, it may be better to be cautious about saying addiction.
045
Jenny Grant Weinandy @jgrantweinandy.bsky.social · 27/03/2026
Assuming we all mean the same thing when we say addiction means we try to shoehorn that distress into our own definitions/experiences (substance based mostly) so we don't do things like think of unique underlying mechanisms or treatments, or fully understand the experience, we just find parallels.

Jenny Grant Weinandy @jgrantweinandy.bsky.social · 27/03/2026
Distress should always be helped and if someone is concerned about their behavior, I will always try to help them, but distress about using something too much does not always mean addiction!

Jenny Grant Weinandy @jgrantweinandy.bsky.social · 27/03/2026
All of this to say, when people say they have an addiction to something, like social media, or they study, treat, or try to prevent addiction, I want to know what exactly they mean by "addiction". I don't doubt the distress, I just want to make sure we are on the same page.

This is actually what my dissertation focused on, and we found that the ways in which we think technology use, like social media, is addictive is different to things like substances!
line graph from Jenny's dissertation showing differences in percentage of participants endorsing various indicators/symptoms that suggest "addictiveness" for three groups of things: Recognized Addictions (i.e., substances & gambling), Technologies (e.g., social media), and Sexual behaviors (e.g., porn). The note states there are significant differences between groups in endorsement of the indicators: Physical Dependence, Induces a Withdrawal, Creates Tolerance, Incites Cravings, Timeline Dependent, and Treatment Needed, based on a MANCOVA analysis. The graph suggests that these indicators were more highly endorsed for Recognized Addictions than the other two groups.

But "addictive" doesn't mean the same thing for everything we use it for! We use the word much more liberally than its stricter (but still changing) scientific definition. For example, not being able to put down your favorite book at night vs opioid use disorder.
101
Jenny Grant Weinandy @jgrantweinandy.bsky.social · 27/03/2026
Historically, our use of "addictive" has changed, and the use often has been based on societal norms, pressures from different groups, and fears of (often very real) problems and distress. Things like cannabis get less "addictive", and tobacco and social media more "addictive".

My research shows that, generally, people perceive technology, including social media, as moderately to very addictive. But, what people mean by that is more up in the air, and doesn't always match how we think of substance use disorders (as you might hear in the video) www.bbc.com/news/videos/...

Is social media addictive? What young adults say
The reactions come after a Los Angeles jury found that Meta and Google intentionally built addictive social media platforms that harm young people's mental health.

10/10 Early identification and discussion could serve as prevention, helping people address multiple addiction risks before they escalate. Sometimes the concern itself tells us something important about overall distress and addiction problems. #AddictionResearch #Psychology #MentalHealth #CSBD

9/10 Important limitations: This was cross-sectional, self-reported data that didn't account for covariates. Future research should use longitudinal designs with advanced statistical methods, more comprehensive measures, and account for important covariates to build on these findings.

Jenny Grant Weinandy @jgrantweinandy.bsky.social · 30/07/2025
8/10 Clinical takeaway: We should screen people with CSB concerns for other addictive behaviors, especially gambling and cannabis. And vice versa - discuss potential CSB concerns with patients who have other addiction issues.
100
Jenny Grant Weinandy @jgrantweinandy.bsky.social · 30/07/2025
7/10 The findings support a more transdiagnostic approach to understanding addiction - where different addictive behaviors may share common risk factors and psychological mechanisms rather than being completely separate conditions.
100
Jenny Grant Weinandy @jgrantweinandy.bsky.social · 30/07/2025
6/10 This suggests that CSB concerns might be a red flag for broader problematic substance use and behavior patterns, even at subclinical levels. It points to potentially shared underlying features between CSB and other addictive disorders.
100
Jenny Grant Weinandy @jgrantweinandy.bsky.social · 30/07/2025
5/10 People with CSB concerns showed higher engagement with ALL substances/behaviors compared to those without CSB concerns. They also reported more problems with these behaviors when they did engage.
100
Jenny Grant Weinandy @jgrantweinandy.bsky.social · 30/07/2025
4/10 Our study looked at this broader group using data from 4,072 census-matched U.S. adults. We wanted to see if CSB concerns correlate with problems across multiple addictive behaviors: alcohol, tobacco, prescription drugs, cannabis, illicit drugs, pornography, gambling, and video games.
100
Jenny Grant Weinandy @jgrantweinandy.bsky.social · 30/07/2025
3/10 We know CSB disorder often co-occurs with substance use disorders and behavioral addictions, like gambling. But what about people who are just concerned about their sexual behavior being out of control, even if they don't meet diagnostic criteria?
