Looks like it's that time of year where I re-learn how to use the heaping pile of garbage that is ExamSoft once again. No rush, I'm sure everyone is tagging questions on Friday afternoon and it's just a usage bottleneck. #AcademicSky

Hey now, let's be fair and say that we live long enough to die from those diseases due to improved efforts against infectious diseases, ie. vaccination, antibiotics, and sanitation.

This part I can agree with - the need for improved medical record systems. But sharing that information with the government or researchers should be opt-in. Also, how can can we have someone in charge of HHS who doesn't know how terrible our medical information systems are? 😳

Around me are all these more-important-than-me people with high positions in the university. Right before I'm introduced, I look down at my notes and see- this blue duck walking across the screen. 2/

There is a circle in a black screen, showing that the software is unresponsive as per usual.

My extra-credit "Show me an error that you caught AI making" idea is either a smashing success at illuminating the weaknesses in LLMs or instead illuminated that students are good at prompting AI to say stupid things. I'm going to hope for the first. #IDSky #academiclife

Same- I think of this all the time. The most common reaction I get to this graphic is "wow, heart disease and cancer have gotten really bad." No- thanks to sanitation, vaccines, and antibiotics, we live long enough to die from chronic diseases.

Nice! If you can, take this kind of photo with a telephoto lens - it will compress the viewpoint and make them standout more. Here's a harshly lit example (mine).

"Today I’m joined by the IDSA- they fight bacteria harder than I fight medical consensus!" @idsainfo.bsky.social (Yes, this is what I saw) #IDSky "Tell us, IDSA- why is antibiotic stewardship is so important when I have a probiotic smoothie that cures literally everything and tastes like mango?”
"Alt text" is right. We are in a different universe.

I’m circling any session presented by Dr G-B from now on. He may be talking about CAP, but he’d fit right in with a showing of Hamlet #escmidglobal #idsky

It is 2025, and Examsoft still makes the most confusing piece of software I've ever encountered. Avoid if possible. At least I'm not alone?

Even ChatGPT can't believe this timeline.
ChatGPT - "There's no way Trump and Elon Musk got in front of the White House with a Tesla""Ooops, that actually happened. Sorry, thought I was hallucinating for a second."

Just gonna say, you need to know what you're doing if you accept ChatGPT's analysis of an article on face value. I'm no expert in immortal time bias, but its initial suggestion of it as a critique didn't make sense to me. "Oh, my bad! I was entirely wrong." 1/
Description of output from ChatGPT about a journal article. It bombed.

I thought about looking up how a beta-lactam can affect an organism that doesn't have a cell wall, but I'm too busy so I'll assume it's wrong. Ditto Legionella. Also, while I get that there are plenty of antibiotic-sensitive C. difficile strains, please don't think that your CDI patient has one. 2/
Wrongness includes mycoplasma, legionella, and clinical CDI.

I tried to get ChatGPT to help me prove the case that switching from meropenem to ertapenem is barely narrowing therapy, since the effects on gut flora are likely the same and the differences on medically important aerobes are minimal. It did worse than I expected. 1/
Please don't use meropenem for MRSA

Now is the time of year where my Word dictionary changes languages, just to mess with me. This is an effective way to stress someone who is upset by the misuse of adjectives as adverbs.
I swear I spelled 'purchased' correctly.

And, many of these people were 'Facebook friends', who I kept in touch with via that service I haven't used in years. Maybe that's how it got me as I Irish-exited long ago. (I also don't know their actual birthdays, except for my wife's cousin AP) 2/

"Day of notifications" is arriving soon for me. I'm not sure what exactly fell out of sync years ago, but it did, and the ramification is that I receive about 100 notifications about fictitious birthdays on New Year's Day. Also, it thinks that everyone was born on January 1, 1601. 1/

Today, in 'signs my employer is trying to get me to leave', my computer's Word dictionary has randomly changed languages again. They know how much time I've spent staring at 'collection', a correctly spelled English word. They know.
