GIGO (garbage in - garbage out) - best description of the government's approach to MAiD for mental illness as sole underlying medical condition that I've seen.

Reason A) appease Alberta and Quebec who went rogue on MAiD (change federal law so there is no more defence of criminal law power for feds to be failing to make) Reason B) put both issues in one Bill so that Senate will sell out people with mental illness in order to get advance requests.

Why is Ottawa so hellbent on limiting access to MAID?Creating unreasonable barriers to medical assistance in dying for people with mental illness is discriminatory. Leaving policies on advance requests to provinces is a cop-out, by @picardonhealth.bsky.social www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/arti...

Will the current Senate have the courage to meet its constitutional obligations to uphold the Charter as did the senators who killed the abortion bill all those years ago?

Some lessons in here for current Government? How many people in Cabinet have any understanding of the lives of the individuals whose rights they plan to take away? (i.e., what it actually takes to meet the eligibility criteria)

"A special ad-hoc cabinet committee on abortion was created, chaired by Murray, who advised ministers to avoid extreme restrictions because "the government would look like fools if it passed a law that was subsequently thrown out by the Supreme Court."

"Mulroney pointed out McDougall was the only woman sitting on cabinet's powerful 20-member priorities and planning committee. Mulroney noted the imbalance did not represent the general population, and he warned committee members McDougall's views on abortion "were therefore not to be taken lightly."

The government's announced approach to MAiD for mental illness and advance requests makes a dog's breakfast of both issues - it's what happens when you ignore reliable evidence and valid arguments and chase an elusive (and indefensible) political strategy.

Just to be clear: What Powlowski said is true. Therein lie the dangers. It’s like saying, “Why make abortions legal when there are people in back-rooms with wire hangers who’ll take care of it? What about throwing the pregnant women down the stairs?”

So Oct 10 is World Mental Health Day. Health Canada will as usual issue a statement - don't suppose they'll acknowledge they just announced an indefinite commitment to the following statement "a mental illness is not considered to be an illness, disease, or disability" - you wrote it, you own it.

And there it is. The "Party formerly known as the Party of the Charter" has decided put MAiD for mental illness with advance requests for MAiD in one piece of legislation - clearly hoping Senators will throw people with mental illness under the bus in order to get advance requests.

Wonder whether any journalists will ask Premier Eby whether he plans to stop allowing the Catholic Church to dictate what health services British Columbians can access in publicly funded hospitals. Worth asking during election campaign. He should be held accountable at the polls for his position.
