Aca-Christmas-Horror-Colleagues I’ve an emergency for an essay on eco-horror and Christmas involving supernatural or magical creatures, pointing to a pagan/folk horror past. Can’t involve ghosts but can be in any media. If interested drop me a message to: baconetti@gmail.com

Thanks! It's done and edited now... until I decide to do the second draft!

It's been a rough week of burning the candle at both ends, but I've finished writing a feature length script - the first piece of creative writing I've attempted since the end of my undergrad. I've got a first draft and I'm determined to make the thing after all it's put me through!

Opening Final Draft for the first time in nearly a decade and I'm completely lost. I need to sit through a pile of YouTube tutorials before developing my notes. What a way to kill the momentum, technology...

Renovating my room (making it livable after years of being entombed by media) has led to me finding and finally sorting my old comic collection. The sickness is back. I may currently be addicted to filling in the decade-long gap via Ebay...

I'm editing a chapter on Santa Slashers and I completely forgot that I wrote a lengthy diatribe about how Santa doesnt exist. It should probably be taken for granted but its also too depressing to chop up. Good editing practice and what amuses me have come into conflict once more

One thing I hate about reporting/research into the manosphere is that they rarely examine the influence of the mythopoetic movement. New media misogyny is a very successful rebrand of the nonsense spewed by Bly and his fellow Jungians, but is discussed as if it popped up out of nowhere

I don't know why everyone thinks that Oz adaptation is a musical? Ariana Grande hasn't shown up once, but there's been a shit load of Nazis and violence

Honestly, I didn't buzz off of The Way of the Dragon as much as I thought I would. As great of a performer as Bruce Lee was, I can't compliment his directing much. This could have been stronger in more experienced hands, but the loose narrative is still fun!

Seven Samurai is as fantastic as always. I've seen it many times, but never on a cinema screen. The village defence in the third act becomes much more brutal and chaotic on the big screen, but the first act feels much more hopeful. It really doesn't need to be recommended at this point...

Frewaka was a sneak preview. It's releasing in cinemas next year and shudder shortly after that. Check this out if you get a chance! It's a fascinating slice of Irish folk horror that deserves to do well. We need as much Irish language cinema as possible!

The Foyle Film Festival has been interesting this year so far. I haven't been able to go see everything I've wanted, but I've caught the highlights: Seven Samurai, The Way of the Dragon, and Frewaka. Unfortunately, I had to ditch Old Boy tonight as I've a pile of marking to get through

I'm watching Viy (1967) for the second time this semester to prep for tomorrow's Euro horror lecture and I'm just realising that I have to somehow jam together my loves of post-fascist Western horror and Soviet/Warsaw Pact horror in a two horror slot. It was pure hubris to think I could do it

This needs a disclaimer: This is complete revisionist history. I didn't like Totally Killer when it was released, but my opinion of it spiked massively (and retroactively) by how little Time Cut dedicates to the Back to the Future premise. I might watch it again tonight to see how I actually feel!

It's genuinely hilarious that the creative team behind The Boys believe they're making punk rock art... while being bankrolled by one of the single most powerful corporations to ever exist.

I wasn't much of a fan of 2023' autumnal and hibernal slasher releases, but 2024's bunch are making me reevaluate them (at least on an aesthetic level)
100
John Kavanagh @jfkav.bsky.social · 17/11/2024
Totally Killer deserves the title of Back to the Future as a slasher, Time Cut feels uninspired and churned out... almost as if they'd heard of another film with an interesting premise to be mimicked. So I'd bet that we don't have a case of parallel productions, more like derivative productions
100
John Kavanagh @jfkav.bsky.social · 17/11/2024
After a chat about parallel releases at the Elm Street conference, I've finally done the research. Time Cut lethargically uses time travel to establish an aesthetic and literally nothing else, whereas Totally Killer dedicates to letting it bleed into every aspect of the text.

I always respected Cobra Kai's dedication to using younger actors that looked nothing like their counterparts, but acted the roles so compellingly that it just worked. Miyagi's double here is quite effective until he shifts into a ghoul. Pretty offputting, folks

Seriously, I have chickenpox, a massive fever, and pain all over. Despite that, I still felt strongly enough to do some video editing and compression to show you all this 11th hour digital necromancy. Let the dead man rest in peace, his back is near broke from carrying this 40 year narrative
