Did a long interview with the VP of the WATR Alliance about the group's push to allow treated oilfield wastewater to be used outside the oilfield. The issues are complicated, the conversation occasionally wonky, but tell me you don't learn something from this. Recorded with NMPBS – link below

The #NewMexico Legislature ended today after a month of lawmaking As per the last few years, things went well for the #oilandgas industry. A recurring bill to reduce #greenhousegas emissions met its demise, again Read all about it: capitalandmain.com/more-lost-ho... @capitalandmain.bsky.social
Photo of Albuquerque at duck with the text "More lost horizons: how New Mexico's climate plan flamed out again
A small clutch of Democratic legislators once again sinks a plan to dramatically reduce the state's greenhouse gas emissions - by Capital & MainThe Clear Horizons & Emissions Codification Act died on the New Mexico Senate floor when seven Democratic senators joined all of the minority Republican caucus to kill it.
While several Democrats spoke in favor of the bill, also known as SB18, Not one person spoke against it, a hint that the vote was decided before the February 11 hearing began. In a later interview, bill sponsor Mimi Stewart said Republicans didn't fight the climate bill that day because, "they didn't need to. They could jsut wait for the seven Democrats that voted with them."The last three years were not jsut the hottest on record, they were even warmer than the historic warming trend would predict.
Some scientists are saying that if an El Niño sets up in the Pacific Ocean next year as expected, 2027 could be warmer still.

Oh - and the exhaust from the larger of the two gas plants would blow over #Hobbs #NM just a few miles away. 5/5 capitalandmain.com/utility-asks...
Quote by Camilla Feibelman of Sierra Club from the story: "There's this fantasy that we'll be able to make oil and gas extraction something that's sustainable in the short or long term, and that's just not a fact."

Wherein I interview a one-time #Texas oilman and learn about the massive mess left behind when his company collapsed. It's also a glimpse into how oil wells get orphaned and how New Mexico may be on the hook for $1.6 billion in cleanup costs in coming years. capitalandmain.com/new-mexicos-...

It's the last week of February, and here in my corner of New Mexico the temp will again reach into the 70s (way above average), the winds have turned the sky grey/tan with blowing dirt and it might both hit 64 and snow this Thursday. I have a related story: capitalandmain.com/another-new-...
